How to Choose an Adventure Program

Students should compare the activities, physical demands, program length, and service focus before choosing a trip.

Choose the activity

Water-focused options include surfing at Playa El Encuentro and snorkeling in Sosúa Bay in the Dominican Republic, as well as rafting on the Sarapiquí in Costa Rica or the Mae Taeng River in Thailand. Peru combines mountain biking, paddleboarding, and zip lining. Thailand Adventurer includes rock climbing, rafting, swimming, and snorkeling, while Thailand: Come With Nothing includes rafting and Muay Thai.

Compare the physical demands

Physical demands vary by program. Water-focused itineraries may involve swimming, snorkeling, surfing, or rafting. Peru includes activities at altitude in the Sacred Valley, Fiji includes hiking, and Thailand Adventurer includes rock climbing and rafting. Individual program pages list applicable swimming, mobility, fitness, and participation requirements.

Choose the service focus

Programs combine adventure with community or conservation work, with approximately 8 to 60 service hours per program. Projects include community infrastructure, trail maintenance, beach cleanups, coral reef conservation, and sea turtle monitoring. Service hours and project activities vary according to program and local partner needs.

Choose the length

Five programs run for 8 days. Peru: Sacred Valley Service runs for 12 days. Fiji: Sun, Sand, and Island Service and Thailand Adventurer run for 16 days. Thailand: Come With Nothing runs for 23 days. Students should compare the time away, travel pace, and number of transfers when considering program length.

Regardless of a program’s activities, service focus, or duration, Program Tuition covers the same core inclusions.

How Rustic Pathways Manages Adventure Program Safety

Rustic Pathways manages safety on adventure programs through trained Program Leaders, vetted third-party activity providers, ongoing safety training, and detailed incident reporting.

  • Trained Program Leaders: Program Leaders supervise students throughout each program. 100% of Rustic Pathways Program Leaders hold current CPR and First Aid certification. Wilderness First Responder certification is required on programs where definitive medical care is more than one hour away.
  • Program Leader Supervision: Rustic Pathways maintains a median of one staff member per 4.37 students (4.37:1), with no program exceeding 7 students per staff member (7:1). Groups average 15 students, and most programs cap enrollment at 20.
  • Risk-Management Training: Rustic Pathways staff members completed Viristar’s month-long Risk Management for Outdoor Programs certification course.
  • Vetted Activity Providers: Rustic Pathways uses carefully vetted providers for technical activities such as surfing, rafting, rock climbing, and zip lining. Providers undergo continuous safety assessments. In 2025, Rustic Pathways terminated contracts with three vendors following assessment failures.
  • Incident Reporting: Rustic Pathways logs all reported behavioral and medical incidents and publishes quarterly safety reports. In 2025, 162 incidents were logged across 2,238 participants. Of those incidents, 142 were classified GREEN (low severity), representing 87.7% of the total.

Activity demands differ by itinerary. Individual program pages list applicable swimming, mobility, fitness, and participation requirements.
