Every community partnership runs 3 years or longer, so a project a student starts in June is still being carried by the same partner the following year.
What Rustic Pathways will not do
Rustic Pathways does not do orphanage tourism, poverty tourism or short-term voluntourism that serves student resumes over local needs.

What is a Rustic Pathways teen travel program actually like?
Travel with a small group of students and Program Leaders. Spend most of each day exploring, participating in activities, and experiencing the destination firsthand.
Days include shared meals, cultural or adventure activities, and time with local people and partners. Many programs also include service, conservation, language, or project-based work. There is downtime, but these are not resort vacations or traditional sightseeing tours.
Most students arrive without knowing anyone. Rustic Pathways reports that 94% travel solo, so meeting the group for the first time is a normal part of the experience. First-time travelers can also choose programs designed for a first independent trip abroad.

How this review was conducted
Between December 2025 and January 2026, Rustic Pathways audited the public websites of 14 companies operating supervised international travel programs for students aged 14 to 18, against a 25-point disclosure framework across company trust, supervision and safety, program structure, and cost and policies. Rustic Pathways publishes this research and also operates teen travel programs, and it applied the same 25 criteria to its own site.
The average company published 14 of the 25 criteria. Rustic Pathways published 23, and names the 2 it failed.
A criterion counts as published only when it appears on the company's own website and is reachable without an enquiry form, a phone call, or a brochure download. Figures given to Rustic Pathways privately, or published by third parties rather than the company, were not counted.
Rustic Pathways publishes four per-criterion counts from this audit: student-to-staff ratio, emergency protocol, staff qualifications, and full cost breakdown. Two of the questions below ask exactly one of those, and the middle column gives the count. Two others cite the nearest scored criterion and say so, because a parent-notification time and a named, directly employed medical director are not themselves scored. The remaining two, a published incident record and a documented first-time-traveler standard, carry no count: the first is scored but its count is unpublished, the second is outside the 25 criteria.
