Rustic Pathways’ community service trips abroad for teens offer supervised travel and locally led projects in conservation, education, public health and infrastructure. Most programs are for ages 14–18, with a Costa Rica option for ages 12–14.

Service activities and hours reflect the current program plans. Projects may change according to community partner priorities, environmental conditions, and local needs. Final service projects are confirmed in the months leading up to each program.

Community service projects fall into four primary categories. A program can concentrate on one category or combine several types of locally identified work.
Improve schools, trails, sanitation facilities and community spaces.
Support local educators through camps, learning activities and exchanges.
Help specialists monitor wildlife, restore habitats and protect reefs.
Support local partners’ health education and community wellness projects.
Local community and conservation partners identify project priorities and intended outcomes. Rustic Pathways’ local teams then establish age-appropriate student roles that support existing work without replacing skilled local labor.
Rustic Pathways works with more than 150 local organizations across 38 countries. Community partnerships last at least three years, and projects align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Rustic Pathways runs its programs directly rather than through third-party vendors. Once project roles are established, Program Leaders and local partners prepare students for the work they will complete.
Preparation with partner communities starts months before students arrive.
Before the 2026 South Korea program, the in-country team read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” at the local library in April and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” in May. Those visits prepared the children and the community for the Rustic Pathways students who arrived in June.
Students receive instructions from Program Leaders and local partners before beginning a project. Service days can involve physical work, field research, educational activities, cultural exchange, or a combination of tasks.
Programs include structured learning and reflection so students understand the local context and consider what responsible service means. No previous volunteer experience is required, but students must follow instructions, work as part of a group, and adapt when local priorities change.
Community service is direct work on a need a community has identified. Service learning adds preparation, guided reflection and learning goals to that work, so students understand the issue behind a project and their part in it.
Rustic Pathways has integrated service learning into its travel curriculum since 1996. Rustic Pathways designs its programs with the S·I·T Framework, which stands for Safety, Impact and Transformation.
Program Leaders are trained to facilitate student debriefs with open questions, careful listening, multiple viewpoints, probing, paraphrasing and student-to-student discussion. Rustic Pathways does not mandate grades for debriefs or reflections. A partner school may decide whether to connect them to its own coursework.
Programs end with Rustic Ties, a closing ceremony in which students and leaders recognize relationships, learning and contributions from the experience.
Rustic Pathways’ 2016 internal evaluation measured student growth across 10 Student Learning Outcomes. A significant number of matched respondents grew from pre-program to six months after the program in 9 of 10 outcomes. The exception was Grit, which showed essentially no sustained average growth.
Rustic Pathways has also published how its programs measure against the National Youth Leadership Council’s K-12 Service-Learning Standards.
Rustic Pathways maintains a median of one staff member per 4.37 students. No Student Travel program exceeds 7 students per staff member.
Dr. William R. Smith, a board-certified emergency physician, has served as Rustic Pathways’ dedicated Medical Director since 2015. Rustic Pathways reports an average parent-notification time of 27 minutes.

Teens can complete community service in four areas: community development and infrastructure, education and youth development, environmental and wildlife conservation, and public health and wellness.
Local community and conservation partners decide which service projects students complete. Rustic Pathways assigns age-appropriate roles that support local priorities without replacing skilled labor.
