Flights to and from the program, the enrollment fee, travel insurance, medical insurance, passport and visa fees, and health costs are separate. Rustic Pathways requires every participant to carry medical insurance with coverage in the destination country, and strongly recommends travel insurance.

Community service projects fall into four primary categories. A program can concentrate on one category or combine several types of locally identified work.
Community Development and Infrastructure
Community development projects address facilities, sanitation, construction, farming, reforestation, and school improvements. Thailand: Come With Nothing, Fiji: Sun, Sand, and Island Service, and Costa Rica: Pura Vida Service include this type of work, while Peru: Sacred Valley Service includes community-based projects completed alongside families in villages in the Sacred Valley.
Education and Youth Development
Education and youth development work includes school improvements, creative learning stations, language exchanges, reading activities, sports, and arts and crafts. Students support local educators and organizations without replacing teachers or other skilled professionals.
Environmental and Wildlife Conservation
Environmental and wildlife conservation combines sea turtle monitoring, hatchery work, beach surveys, wildlife studies, bird banding, seagrass mapping, trail maintenance, coral conservation, habitat restoration, and reforestation. Local conservationists, marine biologists, park staff, and wildlife specialists direct the project-specific work.
Public Health and Wellness
Public health and wellness work supports age-appropriate health education, wellness activities, community improvements, and initiatives led by local health organizations. Dominican Republic: Beachside Service centers its service component on public health and wellness work.
Across all four categories, community and conservation partners determine which projects will support their current priorities.
Local community and conservation partners identify project priorities and intended outcomes. Rustic Pathways’ local teams then establish age-appropriate student roles that support existing work without replacing skilled local labor.
Rustic Pathways works with more than 150 local organizations across 38 countries. Community partnerships last at least three years, and projects align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Rustic Pathways runs its programs directly rather than through third-party vendors. Once project roles are established, Program Leaders and local partners prepare students for the work they will complete.
