From catching waves on Portugal’s Atlantic coast to tasting tapas and exploring Barcelona’s neighborhoods, this program focuses on active days, local flavors, and real-world learning.

  • Learn to surf at beaches near Lisbon with professional local instructors and spend time swimming, snorkeling, or stand-up paddleboarding along the Arrábida coast.
  • Explore Lisbon’s historic and creative districts, including Alfama and LX Factory, and visit landmarks such as Sintra and Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe’s westernmost point.
  • Fly to Barcelona for several days of community service with local organizations, gaining insight into social and cultural issues in Spain.
  • Experience Spanish culture through activities like cooking classes, flamenco workshops, and mosaic art, along with beach time and city exploration.

Accommodation During the Portugal and Spain: Surf, Culture and Culinary Traditions Program

Students stay in comfortable, gender-separated accommodations in both Portugal and Spain, typically sharing rooms with a small group of peers. All accommodations include access to bathrooms with hot water and Western-style toilets. Properties are carefully vetted by Rustic Pathways for safety, cleanliness, and suitability for teen travelers. Specific hotels or villas may vary by session and are subject to change.

Portugal

In Portugal, students usually stay at a spacious countryside villa near Setúbal. The property typically has multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, large common rooms for group meetings, and outdoor areas such as a garden and pool where students can relax after daily activities. Rooms are shared by 2–4 students and include basic amenities for a comfortable stay.

Spain

In Spain, students stay at a comfortable hotel or guesthouse in or near Barcelona. Accommodations generally feature shared rooms, a pool or outdoor recreation space, and common areas for group gatherings.

Note: Exact properties in both Portugal and Spain may change by departure date based on availability and group size, but Rustic Pathways maintains similar standards of comfort, safety, and location for all sessions.

Meals and Water In Portugal and Spain

Meals on this program highlight the coastal flavors of Portugal and Spain while keeping options student-friendly. Breakfast often includes local pastries or simple sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, and cereal, usually served at the base villa in Portugal or the hotel in Spain.

In Portugal, lunches are frequently eaten on the go during surf sessions, coastal outings, or visits to Lisbon and Sintra and may feature local dishes along with familiar international options. Dinners are a combination of family-style meals prepared by chefs at the villa and evenings out at Portuguese restaurants, with opportunities to try regional specialties and desserts.

In Spain, students enjoy tapas-style meals, market visits, and group dinners in Barcelona, as well as activities such as cooking classes where they may learn to prepare dishes like paella or Spanish tortilla. Snacks such as churros, ice cream, and fresh local fruit are often available during city walks and beach time.

Students have regular access to safe drinking water throughout the program. Tap water is generally safe to drink in both Portugal and Spain, and bottled or filtered water is readily available when needed. To reduce plastic waste, participants should bring a reusable water bottle to refill during daily activities.

Dietary Requirements and Food Allergies – Rustic Pathways can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other common dietary needs with advance notice. Families should include detailed information on the student’s medical form, and students with specific preferences are encouraged to bring a few favorite snacks.

Service Projects in the Portugal & Spain: Surf, Culture & Culinary Traditions Program

During the Portugal & Spain: Surf, Culture & Culinary Traditions program, students take part in light service and coastal stewardship activities that connect them with the communities and environments they are visiting.

In Portugal, service activities are typically linked to the Atlantic coast and surf culture. Depending on the session, students may assist with beach cleanups, help remove litter from dunes and coastal paths, or support awareness efforts around ocean safety and environmental responsibility. These projects reinforce the importance of caring for marine ecosystems that support both local communities and visitors.

In Spain, students may participate in short community based projects in and around Barcelona. Examples from past seasons include supporting local organizations focused on neighborhood improvement, assisting with coastal cleanups near urban beaches, or helping with educational or youth oriented activities when partners request support. These experiences give students a window into daily life in Spain while contributing in a respectful, meaningful way.

Specific service tasks, locations, and partner organizations are subject to change each season based on local needs and guidance from community partners. Rustic Pathways works closely with these partners to ensure that student projects are helpful, age appropriate, and aligned with long term goals in each community.
