Accommodations on the Europe Odyssey: Portugal, Spain, Italy & Greece Program
Students stay in a mix of comfortable, gender-separated hotels, guesthouses, and villas across Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece. Rooms are typically shared by 2–5 students and include access to bathrooms with hot water and Western-style toilets. All properties are carefully vetted by Rustic Pathways for safety, cleanliness, and suitability for teen travelers. Specific accommodations may vary by session and are subject to change based on availability and group size.
Portugal
In Portugal, students usually stay at a spacious countryside villa near the Setúbal region or along the coast. These properties often feature multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, large common areas for group meetings, and outdoor spaces such as a garden or pool where students can relax after surf sessions and day trips. Rooms are shared and include basic amenities for a comfortable stay.
Spain
In Spain, students stay at a comfortable hotel or guesthouse in or near Barcelona. Typical features include shared rooms, a pool or outdoor recreation space, and indoor common areas for group activities and evening reflections. Locations are chosen to balance easy access to the city and a relaxed home base.
Italy
In Italy, students stay at charming countryside properties in Northern Italy near towns such as Legnago or Verona. These lodgings often include shared lounge areas for group gatherings, on-site recreation spaces, and outdoor gardens surrounded by scenic landscapes. Most sites offer Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and modern amenities, providing a relaxing environment after daily cultural activities and excursions.
Greece
In Greece, students stay in locally operated guesthouses on the island of Kefalonia, generally within walking distance of the beach and conservation project sites. Depending on the session, accommodations may include quiet studios with garden space, simple beachfront apartments just steps from the water, or small bed-and-breakfast–style properties near local shops and cafés. All options provide Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and a safe, welcoming environment for students.
Note: Exact properties in each country may change by departure date, but Rustic Pathways maintains consistent standards of comfort, safety, and location for all Europe Odyssey sessions.
Meals & Drinking Water on the Europe Odyssey Program
Meals on the Europe Odyssey: Portugal, Spain, Italy & Greece program are designed to showcase local flavors while remaining familiar and student-friendly. Across four countries, students enjoy a mix of hotel and villa breakfasts, casual café lunches, market picnics, and family-style dinners at local restaurants, with plenty of opportunities to try regional specialties and favorite snacks.
Portugal
In Portugal, breakfast is typically served at the villa and may include local pastries, bread, fruit, yogurt, and cereal. Lunches are often eaten on the go during surf sessions, coastal outings, or day trips to Lisbon and Sintra, featuring a mix of local dishes and simple international options.
Dinners combine family-style meals prepared by chefs at the villa with evenings out at Portuguese restaurants, where students can sample regional specialties, seafood, and classic desserts. Snack stops for pastries, ice cream, and fresh fruit are common during city walks and beach time.
Spain
In Spain, students enjoy tapas-style meals, visits to local markets, and group dinners around Barcelona. Activities may include cooking classes where students learn to prepare dishes like paella or Spanish tortilla. Breakfasts are typically served at the hotel and include items such as bread, fruit, yogurt, cereal, and simple hot options.
Throughout their time in Spain, students have frequent chances to try churros, helado (ice cream), fresh fruit, and other snacks while exploring the city and waterfront areas.
Italy
In Italy, breakfast usually features fresh pastries, fruit, yogurt, and cereal served at the base house or hotel. On some mornings, students may visit local cafés or patisseries to experience Italian breakfast culture.
Most lunches are eaten on the go during activities and city explorations and may include pizza, pasta, panini, or simple meals assembled from local markets for picnics. Dinners include a mix of restaurant meals and family-style dishes prepared by local chefs at the base house. While visiting Verona, Venice, Milan, and the Lake Garda area, students can expect frequent snack stops for gelato, pastries, fresh fruit, cappuccino, espresso, and other Italian classics.
Greece
In Greece, students typically have grab-and-go breakfasts at the hotel, such as bread, fruit, eggs, yogurt, and other simple items to start the day before conservation activities.
Lunches and dinners vary depending on whether students are on a boat, at the harbor, or on land. Meals may include Greek salads, grilled meats like souvlaki, locally caught fish, fresh vegetables, and occasional pizza or other student favorites. Kefalonia is known for its local seafood and produce, and students will have opportunities to enjoy these flavors in a relaxed, group setting.
Water & Dietary Needs
Students have regular access to safe drinking water throughout the program. Tap water is generally safe to drink in Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece, and bottled or filtered water is available when needed. To reduce plastic waste, participants should bring a reusable water bottle to refill during daily activities.
Dietary Requirements & Food Allergies – Rustic Pathways can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and many other common dietary needs with advance notice. Families should provide detailed information on the student’s medical form, and students with specific preferences or restrictions are encouraged to bring a few favorite snacks that they know they enjoy.
Service & Community Projects on the Europe Odyssey Program
During Europe Odyssey: Portugal, Spain, Italy & Greece, students complete over 30 hours of service and coastal or environmental stewardship. Much of this work takes place in Italy and Greece, with additional light service in Portugal and Spain. Exact projects, locations, and partner organizations are subject to change each season based on local needs and guidance from community partners.
Portugal & Spain
In Portugal and Spain, students participate in coastal stewardship and community-based projects that connect them with the places they are exploring. In Portugal, service is typically linked to the Atlantic coast and surf culture. Depending on the session, students may help with beach cleanups, remove litter from dunes and coastal paths, or support awareness efforts around ocean safety and environmental responsibility.
In Spain, students may join short community projects in and around Barcelona. Examples from past seasons include supporting local organizations focused on neighborhood improvement, assisting with coastal cleanups near urban beaches, or helping with youth- or education-focused activities when requested by partners. These experiences give students a window into daily life in Spain while contributing in a respectful, age-appropriate way.
Italy
In Italy, each student completes about 5 hours of community service focused on eco-conservation in the Euganean Hills outside Padua. This volcanic hill range, formed roughly 35 million years ago, is now part of a regional park known for hot springs, vineyards, and extensive hiking trails.
Students support local efforts to promote sustainable tourism and environmental education. Tasks vary by season and partner needs, but may include removing invasive plant species, helping maintain or restore hiking paths, or assisting with light habitat improvement projects. As they work, students learn about the area’s history, geology, and ecology, and may have opportunities to collaborate with Italian teens on shared projects.
Greece
In Greece, students complete about 20 hours of community service on the island of Kefalonia, focusing on endangered loggerhead sea turtles and their habitat. Under the guidance of local conservation partners, students help conduct nesting beach surveys, track turtle activity and nests, and participate in beach cleanups to protect important nesting areas.
They also learn about seagrass meadows, sand dune systems, and other key elements of the coastal ecosystem that support sea turtles and local marine life. Through data collection, environmental monitoring, and stewardship tasks, students gain a deeper understanding of how human activity, pollution, and coastal development affect turtle populations and what conservation teams are doing to protect them.
Note: All service activities on Europe Odyssey are planned in collaboration with local partners to ensure that student projects are helpful, sustainable, and aligned with long-term community and conservation goals. Specific tasks and schedules may change by session based on weather conditions and partner priorities.
