Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility at Rustic Pathways

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility at Rustic Pathways

Rustic Pathways offers inclusive teen travel programs designed to be accessible, affirming, and welcoming to students of all identities and abilities. Through proactive Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Accessibility policies, targeted staff training, and program-level accommodations, Rustic Pathways creates travel experiences where every student can thrive.

Why Inclusive Teen Travel Matters

Inclusivity in teen travel matters because for many students, feeling safe and supported while abroad is critical to their ability to fully engage and grow.

At Rustic Pathways, we recognize the unique challenges students from historically marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds face. Whether navigating accessibility concerns, gender identity, neurodiversity, or socio-emotional needs, we strive to eliminate barriers and open teen travel for all to participate with confidence and dignity.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

Rustic Pathways is a global organization rooted in the belief that diversity enriches every learning journey. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and bullying across all programs and support every student regardless of:

  • Race, ethnicity, or national origin
  • Gender identity or expression
  • Sexual orientation
  • Religion or belief
  • Socioeconomic background
  • Physical, emotional, or cognitive ability

This commitment extends to every facet of the student experience, from trip planning and accommodations to in-the-field support.

Operational Protocols & Support Framework

Rustic Pathways’ inclusion policy is embedded into its operations through dedicated planning and traveler-specific accommodations:

Area of Support Our Commitment
Gender Identity & Expression Affirmed names/pronouns used across all documents. Private, safe housing and bathroom options arranged as needed.
Physical & Cognitive Accessibility Pre-trip reviews assess itinerary compatibility. Adjustments made to ensure accessibility without compromising experience.
Emotional & Mental Health Staff trained to recognize signs of distress, homesickness, or culture shock. Local clinical referrals available if necessary.

All adjustments are made collaboratively and confidentially with students and families before travel begins.

How Diverse Is the Rustic Pathways Team?

Rustic Pathways employs a globally diverse team with staff in 38 countries. 92% of its 300 seasonal staff are local to the communities where students travel.

Senior leaders include American, Korean and Italian nationals, and women hold 7 of 9 senior leadership positions (78%). Across the broader leadership team, members speak English, Spanish, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Greek.

Country Directors average more than 25 years of local residency. Students learn from experts who live in the community year-round, ensuring every program reflects genuine local knowledge and lived experience.

Training, Reporting, and Policy Accountability

Rustic Pathways enforces its DEIA policy through:

  • Annual Training: All program staff complete DEIA, cultural sensitivity, and LGBTQ+ competency training, supported by external partners like Gender Spectrum.
  • Real-Time Reporting: Every incident is taken seriously. Confidential reporting channels are available to students, with escalation protocols in place.
  • Annual Policy Review: Our DEIA policy is updated each year in collaboration with legal and youth travel safety experts to meet global safeguarding standards.

How Does Rustic Pathways Train Staff on Inclusion?

Rustic Pathways trains staff on inclusion through annual scenario-based role-plays that cover racial discrimination, socioeconomic difference, gender bias, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and microaggressions.

Program leaders practice responding to real situations. After each role-play, Program Leaders and Managers reflect on incident prevention and resolution techniques.

Rustic Pathways also upholds inclusive language standards and teaches cultural competence and humility across lines of difference.

When a student reports discrimination, bullying, or exclusion, the report goes through the same incident-response system as any other on-program safety incident.

How Does Rustic Pathways Support LGBTQ+ Students?

Rustic Pathways supports LGBTQ+ students by training field staff to maintain a welcoming environment and to respond supportively when a student raises a concern about safety or belonging.

Program Leaders learn to gather information first, check in with the student privately, and affirm the student without treating them differently from the rest of the group.

As part of its Child Safeguarding Policy, Rustic Pathways maintains a zero tolerance policy towards bullying and reserves the right to dismiss any student who bullies or discriminates against others. All students are welcome on programs regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or socioeconomic status, and no student is denied enrollment based on any of these characteristics.

Rustic Pathways discloses when local laws in a program destination affect LGBTQ+ travelers, so students and families can plan with full information.

Rooming for transgender and nonbinary students is planned individually with the student and family before travel, confidentially, prioritizing the student’s safety, privacy, and comfort within the program’s supervision structure.

How Does Rustic Pathways Make Programs Financially Accessible?

Rustic Pathways makes programs financially accessible by offering Service Scholarships and Financial Aid to students regardless of their financial background. These scholarships cover all or part of the program fees for eligible high school students.

How do you support neurodiverse students while traveling?

Before each trip, Rustic Pathways Personal Travel Advisors review a student’s needs and create a customized plan that may include predictable routines, sensory breaks, smaller group settings, and clear communication guidelines. Program leaders are trained to recognize signs of stress, overload, or culture shock and adjust the day accordingly.

Can students with mobility or medical needs join your programs?

Yes. Rustic Pathways conducts pre-trip accessibility reviews to assess each program’s terrain, housing, and activity levels. When needed, we offer alternative activities, schedule adjustments, accessible lodging, and coordination with local medical partners. All accommodations are planned confidentially with families.

How do you ensure student safety on inclusive travel programs?

Rustic Pathways follows a global safety framework that includes 24/7 staff support, real-time incident reporting, local medical partnerships, and annual reviews with youth travel safety experts. Every staff member completes DEIA, cultural competency, and LGBTQ+ inclusion training before leading programs.

Does inclusion affect the rooming or housing setup?

Yes. Students may request private rooms, gender-neutral housing, or bathroom arrangements based on their identity or comfort level. Rustic Pathways’ goal is to provide accommodation that is safe, private, and affirming for every traveler.

What if my student has anxiety or mental health concerns?

The Rustic Pathways team is trained to identify early signs of emotional distress, homesickness, or overwhelm. We offer step-back days, quiet zones, and flexible activity schedules, and can connect families with local professionals when necessary. Communication plans are set before departure to support both students and parents.

Do staff receive training in DEIA and inclusion?

Yes. All Rustic Pathways program leaders complete annual DEIA training, LGBTQ+ competency training, cultural responsiveness education, and role-based safety preparation. We work with external partners, including Gender Spectrum, to maintain high industry standards.

How do you handle bullying or discrimination during a trip?

Rustic Pathways enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for bullying and discrimination. Any incident is immediately documented, escalated through our reporting channels, and addressed with the student and their family. Our goal is to guarantee safety and dignity for every participant.
