Usually, I try to stay in my comfort zone and I don’t do anything outside of the box. But doing Rustic Pathways helped me to open up and be someone who is new and outgoing. I want to help share that feeling and experience with students and peers my age. Going on a Rustic trip was the best decision of my life, and I want other people to help make that good decision and go on the best trip of their entire lives.

Program Profile
Program Profile
Portugal is one of those countries where you can truly slow down and connect with both the people and the land. There’s a beach town with a chill feeling that's waiting to greet you, and you’ll even go to a real-life fairytale palace that is in the middle of the forest. This is nothing like your usual trip, it’s way more fun and actually meaningful too!

Why Choose the Portugal: Lisbon & Surf Culture Teen Travel Program?

Get ready for an awesome experience in Portugal! This Portugal-focused surf and city adventure is perfect for teens who want a balance of time in the water, time in Lisbon, and time with new friends at a villa-style base.

First, you’ll hit the beach for some fun surf lessons, and help out with saving the ocean through marine conservation projects. Every day is something different, like walking around Lisbon, trying delicious food, and checking out all the local places. You’ll also visit a park with cliffs, beaches, and photo worthy views.

  • Learn to surf (or build on your skills) with professional instructors at Costa da Caparica, one of Lisbon’s top surf beaches.
  • Help protect marine environments through eco-conservation projects such as beach cleanups and conservation workshops along the Portuguese coast.
  • Explore Lisbon’s neighborhoods, including historic Alfama and creative hubs like LX Factory, and sample local favorites such as Pastel de Nata.
  • Spend a day along the Arrábida Coast with opportunities to swim, snorkel, or try stand-up paddleboarding in calm bays near Tróia and Setúbal.
  • Visit Sintra’s Regaleira Palace and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point in mainland Europe, then wrap up the week with a Rustic Ties closing ceremony at the villa.

Accommodations on the Portugal Teen Travel Program

Students stay in comfortable, gender-separated accommodations in Portugal, typically sharing rooms with a small group of peers. All lodging includes access to bathrooms with hot water and Western-style toilets, and each property is carefully vetted by Rustic Pathways for safety, cleanliness, and suitability for teen travelers.

On this program, students usually stay at a spacious countryside villa near Setúbal. The villa typically has multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, large common rooms for group meetings, and outdoor areas such as a garden and pool where students can relax after daily activities. Rooms are shared by 2–4 students and include basic amenities for a comfortable stay.

Note: Exact properties may change by departure date based on availability and group size, but Rustic Pathways maintains similar standards of comfort, safety, and location for all sessions.

Meals and Water in Portugal

Meals in Portugal highlight coastal flavors and local ingredients while keeping options student-friendly. Breakfast often includes pastries or simple sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, and cereal, usually served at the villa.

Lunches are frequently eaten on the go during surf sessions, coastal outings, or visits to Lisbon and Sintra and may feature a mix of Portuguese dishes and familiar international options. Dinners are a combination of family-style meals prepared by chefs at the villa and evenings out at Portuguese restaurants, with chances to try regional specialties and desserts.

Students have regular access to safe drinking water throughout the program. Tap water is generally safe to drink in Portugal, and bottled or filtered water is readily available when needed. To reduce plastic waste, participants should bring a reusable water bottle to refill during daily activities.

Dietary Requirements and Food Allergies – Rustic Pathways can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other common dietary needs with advance notice. Families should include detailed information on the student’s medical form, and students with specific preferences are encouraged to bring a few favorite snacks.

Service Projects on the Portugal Teen Travel Program

During the Portugal portion of the program, students take part in light service and coastal stewardship activities that connect them with the communities and environments they are visiting. These projects support local efforts to care for Portugal’s beaches and marine ecosystems.

Service activities are typically linked to the Atlantic coast and surf culture. Depending on the session, students may assist with beach cleanups, help remove litter from dunes and coastal paths, or support awareness efforts around ocean safety and environmental responsibility. These projects highlight the importance of caring for coastal environments that support both local communities and visitors.

Specific service tasks, locations, and partner organizations are subject to change each season based on local needs and guidance from community partners. Rustic Pathways works closely with these partners to ensure that student projects are helpful, age appropriate, and aligned with long-term goals in each community.
