Groups and teachers
Groups start at ten students; smaller groups are considered on a case-by-case basis. One teacher's Program Tuition is free for every eight paying students.
Rooming
Students share gender-separated rooms, each with their own bed. Teachers get private rooms. Homestay rooming arrangements in Bali are confirmed in your school's proposal.
Price
Program Tuition doesn't cover flights to and from the program, travel insurance, medical insurance, or personal spending money.
Flights and documents
Groups book international flights themselves or ask Rustic Pathways to arrange them. Families arrange passports, Indonesia arrival cards, and tourist taxes, with guidance from Rustic Pathways.
Supervision
Program Leaders lead scheduled activities, stay on site, and are available overnight. The approved itinerary specifies any free time, and Program Leaders are present during it.
Effort
Low is limited walking, moderate is a full day on foot, in a rice paddy or on a guided trail, and high is a long day combining several of those.
Flexibility
Fixed days cannot move independently, linked days move only with connected boat, workshop or performance reservations, and adjustable days can change without restructuring the entire program.

What do students learn on an Indonesia school trip?

Students study Hindu and Buddhist heritage, rice farming, conservation and community partnerships through the activities on their chosen route.

  • History and cultural heritage

Visit Uluwatu Temple and Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park in Bali, or Borobudur and Prambanan in Java. Make batik in Yogyakarta.

  • Environmental science

Study subak irrigation while working in Bali's rice paddies. Explore forest and reef ecosystems in West Bali National Park and at Menjangan Island.

  • World languages and community partnership

Practice English and paint murals with students in Tabanan. Make Canang flower offerings with a local host.

A red-brick temple gateway carved with intricate reliefs stands flanked by guardian statues and ceremonial umbrellas.

How safety is managed on a school trip to Indonesia

Program Leaders manage local operations and safety procedures alongside school chaperones. Rustic Pathways manages the itinerary, lodging, transport, activities and emergency procedures; schools manage student conduct and family communications.

Across 13 years of published incident data from every Rustic Pathways program worldwide, 87% of reports were GREEN, the minor tier where the group stays intact.

What the team plans for

  • Temple and cultural sites

Crowd movement, footwear and dress requirements, and steps at Uluwatu Temple, Borobudur, and Prambanan

  • Rice paddy and farm days

Uneven wet terrain, sun exposure and supervised hands-on tasks alongside local farmers

  • Coastal and reef days

Open water, boat boarding and a swim-ability check before the Menjangan snorkel day

  • Road transfers

Coach travel between Sanur, Ubud, Munduk, and Pemuteran, including one longer return leg

Controls built into every trip

  • Written risk plan. A score above 5 requires new controls, reassessment or cancellation.

  • Two-Deep Leadership. A single staff member is never alone with students, and at least two trained Program Leaders, including both a male and a female leader, support each School Group Travel trip.

  • Assessed activity vendors. Snorkel operators, conservation sites, and cultural venues are reviewed before use, every one to two years, and on site when high risk.

  • Medical readiness. WFR coverage for remote programs and Dr. William R. Smith, who has led medical planning as Medical Director since 2015.

Is Rustic Pathways the right partner for your school trip to Indonesia?

These private trips suit schools bringing 10 or more students for 7 to 8 program days. Your group travels with its own teachers and classmates, on dates and a route chosen around your curriculum.

A strong fit

  • You want one private group with your dates and teachers.
  • You can travel for 7 to 8 program days, plus any additional international flight time.
  • You have 10 or more students.
  • You want a day-by-day plan to review before booking.

Talk with us first

  • A student has significant mobility, medical, sensory, mental-health, dietary, or religious support needs.
  • You have fewer than 10 students.
  • You want North Bali. Snorkel participants need a swim-ability check; non-swimmers have a staffed shore option.
  • You want both Bali and Java. These are separate sample routes; combining them needs a separate proposal.

Probably not a fit

  • You are an individual student or parent seeking open enrollment teen travel programs to Indonesia.
  • You want your group to join another school.
  • You want a standard week-long itinerary covering both Bali and Java.

Support planning starts early

Raise individual needs before booking so Rustic Pathways can assess them and adapt the route and support plan where feasible.

Can our school take a trip to Bali without visiting Java?

Yes. Both eight-day Bali school trips focus on Bali, with no Java leg. Combining Bali and Java needs a separate proposal.
