Ireland vs. Portugal, Australia and Greece

Ireland differs from Portugal, Australia and Greece by spending Days 2 to 8 on sustainability in an Irish ecovillage and Dublin, then Days 9 to 13 on geothermal power, hydropower and a glacier in Iceland, with the Dublin to Reykjavik flight included. Portugal offers surfing, cities and culture across Portugal and Spain for less Program Tuition; Australia features field science with researchers and wildlife care at the same Program Tuition; and Greece offers sea turtle fieldwork, or Italian and Greek food and history, at the lowest Program Tuition of the four.

Is Ireland right for your teen?

Ireland is right for your teen if they want hands-on sustainability work in an Irish ecovillage and Dublin, then geothermal power, hydropower and a glacier in Iceland, in one 13-day program.

Ireland fits if…

  • Your teen wants to live and work alongside the Cloughjordan community: land care and planting with residents, seed saving, soil preparation and a repair session in the village fabrication laboratory.
  • Your teen wants to see how energy is made, from the village district heating in Cloughjordan to a geothermal energy facility on the Reykjanes Peninsula and a hydropower site in South Iceland.
  • Your teen wants a day on and around a glacier, then the black sand coastline and its coastal ecosystems.
  • Your teen is happy with vegetarian and vegan meals as the default, much of the food grown on the Cloughjordan community farm, and with helping to prepare them.

Look elsewhere if…

  • Your teen wants surfing, cities and culture, with an optional chaperoned group flight from Newark: Portugal & Spain: Culture & Coast in Portugal, 12 days at $5,395.
  • Your teen wants sea turtle field research, with 20 service hours, at lower tuition: Island Turtle Conservation in Greece, 9 days at $3,495.
  • Your teen wants wildlife field science with researchers, plus surfing and snorkeling: Queensland Ecosystems and Wildlife Conservation in Australia, 14 days at the same Program Tuition.
  • Your teen wants Italian and Greek food, culture and ancient sites rather than sustainability work: Italy & Greece: Culture, Food & Exploration in Greece, 12 days at $5,395.
