The Indonesia teen travel program for summer 2027
Scuba, Culture and Adventure is Rustic Pathways’ only Indonesia teen travel program for summer 2027. Students begin and end in Denpasar, take a PADI Discover Scuba pool session and two guided dives, spend a night in a Balinese village compound in Tabanan, climb Mount Batur, and raft the Ayung River.

Indonesia vs. Thailand, Belize and Japan
Indonesia fits PADI scuba, a Balinese village stay and a Mount Batur sunrise climb into 10 days at the lowest tuition of the four. Thailand offers longer programs with elephants, hill-tribe villages and Krabi; Belize offers both rainforest and reef experiences in an English-speaking country; and Japan focuses on city and homestay culture.

Is teen travel to Indonesia safe?
Yes, teen travel to Indonesia is safe on a supervised Rustic Pathways program. The U.S. State Department rates Indonesia Level 2 and places only Central Papua and Highland Papua at Level 4, far from Bali,3 and the program runs in Bali’s dry season, April to October.4

A first for Rustic Pathways
Bali: Scuba, Culture and Adventure is the first Rustic Pathways student travel program in Indonesia. Students dive with PADI instructors and spend a night in a house compound in Tabanan, cooking dinner with a host family. Rustic Pathways has operated student travel since 1983.
No diving experience needed
Most students come alone and do not know anyone, and no diving experience is needed. A PADI Discover Scuba pool session comes first, then two guided open-water dives with PADI instructors.

Indonesia teen travel FAQ
How is Indonesia different from other countries for teen travel?
On Rustic Pathways’ 10-day Bali program, students try introductory scuba diving, experience Balinese village traditions and climb Mount Batur at sunrise.
Do students need scuba experience for the Indonesia program?
No, students do not need scuba experience for the Indonesia program. Students begin with a PADI Discover Scuba pool session on Day 4, followed by two guided open-water dives at Padang Bai on Day 5. PADI instructors supervise smaller groups and set in-water ratios. Diving requires medical screening, so disclose any relevant conditions to Admissions early.
What do students need to travel to Indonesia?
Students need a passport valid for at least six months and medical insurance valid in Indonesia. U.S. citizens need a visa on arrival, purchased at Denpasar or online beforehand; requirements for other nationalities vary. Travel insurance is optional but strongly recommended.
The CDC’s Indonesia travel health guidance recommends typhoid vaccination for most travelers and hepatitis A vaccination for unvaccinated travelers. Its August 7, 2026 Level 2 notice reports Zika cases among travelers returning from Bali. Review this guidance before departure.
Can the Indonesia program handle dietary needs and food allergies?
Yes, the Indonesia program makes reasonable accommodations for dietary needs and food allergies when they can be delivered safely. Share needs at enrollment. Rustic Pathways’ health and safety team reviews every medical form and helps families plan meals, allergies and medications.
What is the village stay in Tabanan like?
The village stay in Tabanan is one night at Rumah Desa, a working Balinese house compound with simple, gender-separated sleeping areas. Students make canang sari offerings and cook with a host family on Day 6, then spend the next morning in rice fields before traveling to Ubud.
