How safety is managed on a school trip to Serbia

Program Leaders manage local operations and safety procedures alongside school chaperones. Across 13 years of published incident data from every Rustic Pathways program worldwide, 87% of reports were GREEN, the minor tier where the group stays intact.

What the team plans for

  • Belgrade and Novi Sad

City traffic, group movement on foot around Kalemegdan and Skadarlija, and coach transfers between hotels and sites in both cities.

  • The eastern Danube corridor

Long coach transfers linking Silver Lake, Golubac Fortress, Lepenski Vir, and Kladovo along the eastern Danube, then a full return drive to Belgrade.

  • The western mountain roads

Mountain roads through the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge to a single base in Zlatibor, a narrow-gauge railway excursion on the Šargan Eight, a working pottery visit in Zlakusa, and the managed route through Stopića Cave.

Level 2  Exercise increased caution. Read live on 2026-09-08, the U.S. State Department's Serbia travel advisory, issued August 27, 2026, sets Level 2 for crime, and police response can take longer than in the United States. Travelers cannot enter Serbia directly from Kosovo.

Controls built into every trip

  • Written risk plan. A score above 5 requires new controls, reassessment, or cancellation.

  • Two-Deep Leadership. A single staff member is never alone with students, and at least two trained Program Leaders, including both a male and a female leader, support each School Group Travel trip.

  • Assessed activity vendors. The Sargan Eight railway and the Zlakusa pottery workshop are reviewed before use, every one to two years, and on site when high risk.

  • Medical readiness. WFR coverage for remote programs and Dr. William R. Smith, who has led medical planning as Medical Director since 2015.
