Frequently Asked Questions About Rustic Pathways
How much does a Rustic Pathways program cost?
Programs start at approximately US $2,495, and the fee includes:
- 24/7 supervision throughout the trip
- All meals, accommodation and program‑activities
- Insurance coverage during the program
- Ground transport and logistics once on‑site
Chaperoned flights to the hub airport may be available.
What’s not included in the price of a Rustic Pathways program?
Typical exclusions:
- The student’s international/round‑trip flight to the destination (unless booked through us)
- Souvenirs and optional personal spending
- Optional arrival or departure extensions (extra nights)
- Some visa or travel‑document fees
How are flights handled on Rustic Pathways programs?
You have two options to book flights:
- Group‑chaperoned flight: Student travels from the designated hub airport, accompanied by a Rustic Pathways leader from check‑in through baggage claim and transfer in country.
- Independent arrival: The student arranges their own flight; we will provide arrival instructions, airport pickup point and on‑site transfer. Extra nights may incur additional cost.
Do I need to book the flight myself?
If you choose independent arrival, yes, you must book the international flight to the destination hub. If you select the group‑flight option, Rustic can arrange the flight (or a flight recommendation) as part of the program.
What ages can participate in a Rustic Pathways program?
Rustic programs are generally designed for students ages 12 to 22, covering middle school, high school and college‑aged participants. Each individual program is tailored to a specific age band to match interests, activities and ability.
Can my child go with a friend or sibling?
Yes! During enrollment you may indicate a preferred roommate or “friend request.” We will attempt to place them in the same program group and in the same room where possible. A friends & family discount may apply.
What is the gender breakdown on teen trips?
Gender breakdown and ratio varies by destination and session. Many programs aim for approximately 50/50 but this cannot be guaranteed. Please contact our team for the specific ratio for the session you’re looking at.
What is the accommodation like?
Accommodation is clean, safe and comfortable. The type of lodging depends on the destination: it may be a guesthouse, lodge, base‑house, hotel or a homestay. Homestays or cultural‑immersion programs may have more local‑style bathrooms. Learn more about Rustic Pathways basehouses.
What about the meals? Can special diets be accommodated?
Meals are included and we aim to provide healthy, balanced food and fresh local produce. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions or allergies provided we are informed in advance.
Is supervision provided 24/7?
Yes. Students have supervision throughout the program, including structured free‑time transitions. Groups are sized to give proper attention. For example, a typical student‑to‑leader ratio is six‑to‑one (6:1), though this may vary by program.
Who are Rustic Pathways staff and what training do they have?
Program Leaders (and other staff) come from diverse backgrounds, often with teaching, youth‑work or travel experience. All leaders are trained in first‑aid and safety protocols and operate within the program’s risk‑management framework. Local staff support on‑site to give students both global and local perspectives. Learn more about the Rustic Pathways program leaders.
My child has never travelled without me. Is this okay?
Absolutely. Many students are first‑time independent travellers. The program is structured to help them make friends quickly (often via orientation), and they receive full support from trained leaders. Our design emphasizes safety + community + growth.
What if my child needs spending money or wants to buy extra items?
Yes. We recommend bringing around US $150 per week for souvenirs or snacks. The exact amount depends on destination, personal habits and optional activities.
Can I change sessions or cancel after enrolling?
Yes. You may change sessions or cancel after enrolling. Specific terms, timelines and fees apply (see our Enrollment Terms & Conditions for full details).
What about payment plans?
Yes. Payment can often be made in installments rather than all up‑front. Please refer to your portal or contact our admissions team for schedule and options.
