Rustic Pathways offers travel programs with homestays that balance authentic cultural immersion with rigorous safety measures. Every homestay is carefully vetted to ensure student well-being and parent peace of mind, while still providing meaningful connections with local families. What Is a Homestay? In a homestay, students live with trusted local families in the communities they visit. Instead of staying in basehouses, hotels, or dorms, students share daily routines with their hosts: eating meals together, learning traditions, and gaining a firsthand understanding of culture. Rustic Pathways has refined its homestay model over decades, combining cultural immersion with industry-leading safety standards. How Rustic Pathways Selects Homestay Families Families are chosen through a structured, community-first process designed to ensure both safety and cultural depth: Community Meetings: Rustic staff meet with entire communities to promote transparency and inclusivity in family selection. Coordinator Selection: A trusted local coordinator manages communication and logistics. Home Inspections: Each potential home is reviewed using the Rustic Pathways Homestay Safety Assessment Form. Approval and Training: Families must meet Rustic Pathways Activity Standards and agree to Host Family Expectations in both English and the local language.
