9 days | Ages 18-22 | Summer 2026 | Fully Supervised | 4.9 on GoOverseas | International flights not included

1 / 14

Morocco: Souks & High Atlas Service is a 9-day teen travel program for college students ages 18–22. Students journey from the vibrant souks of Marrakech to a High Atlas Mountain village, completing approximately 18 hours of community service alongside local families. The program combines hands-on service, cultural exchange, and outdoor adventure while living in both a traditional mountain guesthouse and a Marrakech riad.

What Will Students Experience?

Students experience daily life in an Amazigh mountain village through community-driven service projects and cultural workshops such as bread-making, tea ceremonies, and carpet weaving. In Marrakech, they explore historic souks and palaces before riding camels at sunset in the Atlas foothills. Days balance meaningful service with cultural immersion and exploration across urban and rural Morocco.

What Do Parents Ask?

How do flights work?

Students fly into and out of Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Rustic Pathways staff will meet the group upon arrival and remain with students throughout the trip. All in-country transportation between Marrakech and the High Atlas Mountains is provided via private, fully vetted vehicles. The program’s advertised dates include international travel time.

A chaperoned group flight is available for this program.

What’s included in the price?

Included: Lodging, all meals, in-country transport, all activities, 24/7 staff.
Not included: International airfare, travel insurance, personal spending ($150–200).

Do you offer financial aid or scholarships?

Yes. Payment plans are available for all families, and Rustic Pathways offers both need-based financial aid and merit scholarships. Explore scholarships and financial aid →

Is travel insurance required?

Travel insurance is not included in the program fee. Rustic Pathways recommends that families purchase travel insurance. Get a quote from our recommended provider →

Who’s supervising my child?

Rustic Pathways Program Leaders complete a four-month vetting process, and programs maintain a 7:1 student-to-staff ratio. All Program Leaders are first-aid certified, and most have led multiple Rustic Pathways programs. Leaders range from 25 to 35 years old.

Are rooms gender-separated?

Yes. Students are housed in gender-separated rooms at both the Marrakech hotel/riad and the High Atlas guesthouse. Rooms are shared (2–3 students) with private or shared bathrooms.

What about medical emergencies?

All Program Leaders are first-aid certified. Nearest hospitals are mapped out in all locations. Our health & safety team reviews all medical forms before departure and works with families to plan medications, allergies, and dietary needs.

Can I reach my child?

Yes. Staff can be reached via the 24/7 Rustic Pathways emergency line. Students can contact family during free time. Note: this is a college program — students have more independence in communication.

How will I know they’re okay?

Rustic Pathways staff provide updates and communication guidance before departure. Parents/families can expect regular contact from students and can always reach the 24/7 emergency line.

What is the phone/device policy?

Students may bring phones but personal device use is not allowed during group activities in a way that disrupts group dynamic. Wi-Fi is limited — available mainly at Marrakech accommodation and occasionally at the mountain guesthouse. Students are encouraged to disconnect and be fully present.

How big is the group and how old are the participants?

This is a college program for students ages 18–22. Groups are small and sized for a quality experience. Students come from universities across the US and internationally.

Can international (non-U.S.) students join this program?

Yes. International students from 53+ countries join programs like this each year. After enrollment, the team coordinates flights into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). International students should confirm visa requirements for Morocco. Rustic guides students through booking flights matching group schedules, meeting passport/visa requirements for Morocco, and coordinating arrival/departure with Program Leaders.

Do students come with friends, or on their own?

Both are common. Many college students travel solo and make connections through the program. Ice-breakers on Day 1 help students connect quickly.

What is the accommodation like?

Two locations: (1) A comfortable hotel or riad in Marrakech at the start and end of the trip — double or triple occupancy rooms with private or shared bathrooms, hot water; (2) A traditional guesthouse in a High Atlas Mountain village during the service portion — shared rooms and bathrooms with simple but modern facilities. Both meet Rustic Pathways’ safety and cleanliness standards.

Can friends room together?

Roommate requests considered where possible. Final rooming decisions made by staff for safety and group balance.

Will my child have unsupervised time?

Note: college students (18–22). The program is structured with staff-led activities. Students have some free time in Marrakech (e.g., morning on Day 8 for last-minute shopping) under general oversight.

Can you accommodate dietary needs & food allergies?

Authentic Moroccan cuisine is served throughout — tagines, couscous, fresh bread, olives, fruit, plus simpler options. Vegetarian and other dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice. Bottled/filtered water always provided. Tap water not for drinking.

How much spending money?

Approximately $150–200 recommended for souvenirs, snacks, and personal purchases in Marrakech’s markets. Morocco’s currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD), though some places accept major credit cards.

Do we need a visa?

Morocco is an international destination. Most U.S. passport holders do not need a visa for Morocco for stays under 90 days. International students (non-U.S.) should confirm their specific visa requirements. Students should also ensure their passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the program end date.

What if I feel homesick or overwhelmed?

Adjusting to a new culture is part of the experience. Rustic Pathways staff are trained to support students. Read more about how we support students with homesickness and anxiety.

What Should You Know?

Who thrives on this program?
College students (ages 18–22) who are curious about new cultures, comfortable with moderate physical activity (community service, light construction, city walks, mountain terrain), open to dormitory/guesthouse-style accommodation, and ready to engage meaningfully with local communities. Those who want both urban exploration (Marrakech medina, souks) and rural immersion (Berber village service).
What do students do each day?
Service work in High Atlas villages (school facilities, pathways, garden), cultural workshops (carpet weaving, calligraphy), medina/souk exploration with local guides, camel ride, Jemaa el-Fna Square at sunset. Evenings include group meals and Rustic Ties reflections.
Who may not suit this program?
Students who prefer luxury accommodation, require significant alone time, are uncomfortable with shared rooms or simple facilities, or don’t want a structured program schedule. Not a beach/resort trip.
Why Morocco?
Morocco sits at the crossroads of Berber, Arab, Andalusian, and Sub-Saharan African cultures. Marrakech’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site. High Atlas Berber mountain villages offer authentic community-based service.
What makes the High Atlas component unique?
Rustic works with established mountain village communities where students do genuine service — not tourist activities dressed as service. Students work alongside local families, share meals in guesthouses, and learn about Amazigh culture.
What does Marrakech offer?
An 11th-century medina, centuries-old souks, Jemaa el-Fna Square (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — storytelling, music, food culture), Bahia Palace, and the Mellah (Jewish quarter).
What cultural exchanges are built in?
Carpet weaving demonstrations, calligraphy and Islamic arts workshop, Gnawa music farewell celebration, visit to Mellah and synagogue, shared meals with host families in both city and mountains.
