Service Projects in Morocco
Rustic Pathways partners with local community associations and village leaders in Morocco to identify meaningful, community-focused service projects for students. While we strive to deliver all advertised projects, please note that some activities may shift depending on local needs and partner availability.
Types of Service Activities
During this program, students will engage in a variety of hands-on service learning projects designed to strengthen community infrastructure and deepen their understanding of rural Moroccan life. These may include:
- Improving school facilities: Assist with classroom maintenance, painting, or setting up shared learning spaces in an Amazigh (Berber) village.
- Supporting community centers and co-ops: Help with small-scale repairs or expansions of local vocational and women’s centers.
- Assisting with agricultural or village infrastructure projects: Work on pathways, irrigation channels, or shared community areas identified by local residents.
- Participating in cultural exchange: Join local families for tea ceremonies, bread-making, and conversations that highlight Moroccan traditions and hospitality.
- Practicing language and reflection: Learn basic Darija (Moroccan Arabic) or Amazigh phrases and reflect on the experience through guided group discussions.
Meals and Water During the Morocco Program
Students will have many opportunities to try Moroccan cuisine, experiencing both the country’s famous dishes and local flavors. Meals are prepared by local cooks or host families using fresh regional ingredients and are served in a communal setting that reflects Morocco’s warm hospitality. Familiar food options will also be available for students who prefer something closer to home.
Typical Meals
- Breakfast: Fresh bread, jam or honey, cheese, olives, and mint tea or coffee
- Lunch & Dinner: Traditional Moroccan dishes such as tagine (slow-cooked stew with meat or vegetables) and couscous served with seasonal vegetables, legumes, or meats. Meals often include local breads, olives, and end with sweets or pastries flavored with honey, orange blossom, or nuts.
Water and Hydration

Packing List for Morocco College Travel & Community Service Program
Here’s a recommended packing list based on feedback from past Rustic Pathways students and staff who have traveled to Morocco for summer break programs. Adjust it to fit your personal preferences and needs, especially for items like socks, underwear, and toiletries.
Important: Students should be able to carry all their own luggage. Throughout the trip, you’ll be responsible for moving your bag through airports, loading and unloading vehicles, and walking short distances on uneven streets or village paths.
Luggage Guidelines
- Personal Item: A small backpack or daypack is ideal. You’ll use this daily for cultural excursions, hikes, and service projects.
- Main Bag (carry-on or checked): A 40–50 liter duffel bag or travel backpack works best. Choose something lightweight and easy to carry up stairs or through narrow village walkways.
Weather Considerations
Summer in Morocco brings hot, sunny days and cooler evenings, especially in the mountains. Pack layers that can handle both conditions: light shirts for the day, and a sweater or jacket for the evenings.
Packing Tips
- Use packing cubes or small stuff sacks to stay organized during transitions between Marrakech and the mountains.
- Pack modest, lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees, in line with local customs.
- Bring quick-drying fabrics for handwashing and layering options for temperature changes.
- Limit bulky items, as luggage space in vehicles and guesthouses is often limited.
