Welcome to South Africa!

Arrive into Johannesburg Airport (JNB) and meet your Program Leaders who will be with you for the duration of the program. Head to your accommodations and settle in, relaxing after your long flight. Join the group for an orientation discussion about the week ahead, expectations for your adventure, and an introduction to the local culture. Later, unwind and acclimate with a visit to the Mall of Africa, the largest shopping mall in Africa.

Exploring Johannesburg 

Explore Johannesburg’s historical and cultural landmarks. Visit the Hector Pieterson Memorial, honoring the students who bravely protested during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Tour Nelson Mandela's former home, then head to the Gauteng District School to interact with students. Discover the powerful history documented at the Apartheid Museum. Later, enjoy some relaxation at the Gold Reef Amusement Park. Delve into Soweto, the iconic "South Western Townships" pivotal in the anti-apartheid struggle. Discover Vilakazi Street, where both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu once lived.

Journey to Kruger National Park 

Begin the day with a thrilling toboggan ride at Long Tom Misty Mount, followed by a unique experience descending into the forest floor at Graskop Gorge. Later, travel to the world-renowned Kruger National Park, preparing for an unforgettable wildlife experience.

Safari in Kruger National Park

Set out in an off-road safari vehicle for a full-day game drive through Kruger National Park. Keep your eyes peeled for Africa’s Big Five: elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos, as well as a host of other incredible wildlife.

Travel to Cape Town 

After an early morning bush walk to witness wildlife up close, take a flight to Cape Town. This historic city, once a colonial resupply port, is now a cultural hub reflecting South Africa’s complex history. Spend the afternoon exploring the Company’s Garden and Greenmarket Square, then settle in with some free time at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Enjoy dinner with your group and prepare for the days ahead.

Discovering Cape Town 

Start with a visit to Table Mountain, where weather permitting, you’ll either hike to the summit or ride a cable car, taking in panoramic views of the city, ocean, and mountain ranges. Visit the District Six Museum, offering insight into apartheid’s impact on local communities. Tour notable sites like Company Gardens, Greenmarket Square, and the bustling Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Conclude with a ferry ride to Robben Island (weather permitted), where you’ll tour the former maximum-security prison and visit Nelson Mandela’s cell.

In the morning, head to Langa, the city's oldest township. For lunch, enjoy an authentic South African meal at Lelapa Restaurant, a beloved local spot run by Sheila, a respected community member. Afterwards enjoy some free time.

Embark on a scenic guided tour of Cape Town’s coastal gems: Sea Point, Clifton, and Camps Bay. Journey through Cape Pointe Nature Reserve, then stop at Simon’s Town and Muizenberg. The day’s highlight is a visit to Boulders Beach, where you’ll observe the charismatic African Penguin Colony.

Spend the morning exploring the V&A Waterfront, perfect for picking up last-minute souvenirs. Your Program Leaders will take you to the airport for your departure as you say goodbyes and reflect on your adventure.

What Do School Organizers Ask?

How do flights work?

School groups can arrange their own flights, or Rustic Pathways can arrange them as an optional add-on. In either case, teachers fly with students, and Rustic Pathways coordinates airport pickup and handles all in-country logistics.

What's included in the price?

Included: Lodging, all meals, in-country transport, all activities, 24/7 staff.
Not included: International airfare, travel insurance, personal spending ($150–200).

Is travel insurance required?

Travel insurance is not included in the program fee. Rustic Pathways recommends that families purchase travel insurance. Get a quote from our recommended provider →

Who supervises the students?

Rustic Pathways Program Leaders complete a four-month vetting process, and programs maintain a 7:1 student-to-staff ratio. All Program Leaders are first-aid certified, and most have led multiple Rustic Pathways programs. Leaders range from 25 to 35 years old.

Are rooms gender-separated?

Yes. Students room with same-gender peers. Staff stay in adjacent rooms.

What about medical emergencies?

All Program Leaders are first-aid certified. Nearest hospitals are mapped out in all locations. Our health & safety team reviews all medical forms before departure and works with families to plan medications, allergies, and dietary needs.

Can students contact home?

Yes. Rustic Pathways’ policy is that students can call, text, or WhatsApp anytime. Rustic Pathways is happy to defer to established school policies instead.

How do families stay informed?

Rustic Pathways sends daily photo updates throughout the program.

How big is the group?

Group size varies based on the school’s needs. Contact Rustic Pathways for a custom quote.

Can friends room together?

Yes. Rustic Pathways provides a room list prior to travel. Schools can assign rooming allocations or allow students to choose their roommates.

Will students have unsupervised time?

Structured independence with staff nearby. No unsupervised time in public areas.

Can Rustic Pathways accommodate food allergies? 

Yes. Dietary needs are collected during enrollment and shared with all meal providers.

How much spending money should students have?

$150–200 recommended. Tipping is included, no extra cash needed.

What if a student gets homesick?
