Inclusive Travel: Accessibility & Accommodations
Rustic Pathways is committed that all students can be global travelers and citizens. We aim to support every student who wishes to participate, regardless of background or ability.
While Rustic strives for maximum accessibility, the programs often take place in remote villages, historic sites, and developing regions where local infrastructure (like ramps, paved walkways, or lifts) may be limited or non-existent. Rustic’s unique operational model, which prioritizes authentic immersion over tourist amenities, means that universal accessibility is not always possible in every destination.
Our Policy and Process
We utilize a proactive, individualized assessment process to ensure the safety, comfort, and full participation of every student with a disability or chronic condition.
- Early Disclosure is Key: If a student requires accommodations, including for mobility, medical equipment, chronic conditions, severe allergies, or mental health support, we require a disclosure to Rustic’s team prior to registration.
- Individualized Review: Rustic’s Director of Operations and Medical Team will review the student’s needs, current support plan, and the specific program itinerary (lodging, transport, activities) to conduct a comprehensive feasibility assessment.
- Collaborative Matching: We work collaboratively with the student and family to identify the best-fit program and destination that can realistically support the student’s specific needs, or to adjust the chosen itinerary to maximize accessibility.
- Staff Training: Program Leaders and local partners are trained on specific protocols for assisting students with disabilities, emergency procedures, and respectful communication to ensure a seamless experience.
We are dedicated to an attitude of “Yes, we can do this,” but Rustic’s first priority is always the safety and well-being of the student.
