Travel for All is Rustic Pathways’ commitment to making teen travel accessible to every student, regardless of financial background, physical, or mental ability. Rustic Pathways delivers that commitment through scholarships and flight grants, the free Climate Leaders Fellowship, and individualized accommodations for mobility, dietary, medical, neurodiverse, and mental health needs.
Rustic Pathways has run programs since 1983 and welcomed 155,829 alumni across 38 countries. 92% of its seasonal, in-country staff are locals, so students are supported by people who live where they travel.
Travel for All extends that support to students who need financial aid or special accommodations. Rustic Pathways treats travel as an essential part of education that every student deserves.
“I grew up in a middle-class family, and I couldn’t have imagined being able to take a trip like this. Climbing the ladder in life should be measured by who you hand the ladder down to. Travel for All had to be inclusive for every student, including those who need accommodations, whether physical or financial.”
Shayne Fitz-Coy, CEO, Rustic Pathways

Inclusive Travel: How Rustic Pathways Accommodates Every Student
Rustic Pathways aims to support every student who wants to become a global traveler, regardless of background or ability. Rustic Pathways uses a proactive, individualized assessment for each student with a disability or chronic condition and matches that student to a destination and itinerary that fit their needs.
Rustic Pathways is candid about limits. Programs often take place in remote locations and developing regions where infrastructure, such as ramps, paved walkways, and lifts, may be limited or nonexistent.
The Rustic Pathways model prioritizes authentic immersion over tourist amenities, so universal accessibility is not possible in every destination. The team’s job is to find the destinations where each student can participate fully and safely.
Can students with mobility or physical accessibility needs travel with Rustic Pathways?
Rustic Pathways assesses mobility accommodations on a program-by-program basis, because accessibility varies by destination.
The team reviews lodging, transportation, and daily activities for each itinerary and matches students to the destinations that best support their mobility needs. Many programs operate in remote villages and historic sites where accessibility infrastructure may be limited.
What dietary restrictions and food allergies can Rustic Pathways accommodate?
Rustic Pathways accommodates vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, and allergy-related diets on all programs. Families disclose dietary needs before enrollment, and Program Managers and Leaders coordinate with local kitchens and partners to prepare safe meals.
Students with severe or life-threatening allergies should describe their condition in full on the medical form so the team can prepare before arrival.
Does Rustic Pathways support students with learning differences or neurodiversity?
Rustic Pathways supports students with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism spectrum conditions.
Families share the student’s current support plan during intake, Program Leaders are briefed on the strategies that help that student participate fully, and Rustic Pathways selects a program whose structure and pace fit the student.
Can students with medical conditions or daily medication travel with Rustic Pathways?
Students with chronic health conditions or daily medication needs can travel with Rustic Pathways after a medical review.
Personal Travel Advisors review medication storage, refrigeration, dosing schedules, and access to care along the program itinerary, paired with the pre-travel medical consultation described in the Student Travel Vaccination Guide.
Does Rustic Pathways provide mental health support on programs?
Rustic Pathways accommodates students with anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. Families disclose current treatment and support needs during intake, and Program Managers and Leaders plan for continuity of care on program.
Rustic Pathways treats mental health with the same preparation and privacy as physical health.
How many staff support each student on a Rustic Pathways program?
Rustic Pathways runs groups of 8 to 18 students with about one staff member for every 4.37 students (verified in 2025).
Smaller groups enable Program Leaders to give each student, including those who need extra support, the attention their accommodation plan requires.
How do families request special accommodations at Rustic Pathways?
Families request accommodations by contacting the Rustic Pathways admissions team before enrollment at (440) 975-9691 or rustic@rusticpathways.com.
Early disclosure gives Personal Travel Advisors and Program Managers time to review the student’s needs against the itinerary and confirm the best fit. All requests are handled confidentially.
- Disclose early. Share any need for mobility support, medical equipment, chronic-condition care, severe allergies, or mental health support before enrollment.
- Individualized review. The Rustic Pathways Director of Operations and Medical Team review the student’s needs, current support plan, and the specific itinerary for a feasibility assessment.
- Collaborative matching. Rustic Pathways works with the student and family to identify the best-fit program and destination, or adjusts the itinerary to maximize accessibility.
- Staff training. Program Leaders and local partners are trained on protocols for assisting students with disabilities, emergency procedures, and respectful communication.
Rustic Pathways starts from “Yes, we can do this,” while keeping the safety and well-being of the student the first priority. Where cost rather than logistics is the barrier, Service Program Financial Aid opens the same programs.
Service Program Financial Aid & Scholarships
Rustic Pathways offers Service Program Financial Aid to make planned trips possible for students regardless of financial background. Awards range up to full tuition, and, through a partnership with BYOJet, participants can also receive grants toward flights.
To date, Rustic Pathways has awarded $3.6 million in scholarships and financial aid, opening programs to students who could not otherwise have afforded them. See how a travel scholarship changed things for one student below.
Programs run from $1,995 to $14,995 for students ages 14 to 18, and financial aid packages reduce that cost without reducing program quality.
Whether a student is taking a first international trip or a longer service program, Rustic Pathways works to fit the budget. For students who cannot travel at all, the free Climate Leaders Fellowship brings the experience home.
Three ways Travel for All lowers the barrier
| Pathway | Cost to the student | Best for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service Program Financial Aid | Reduced, up to full tuition | Students who need help affording an in-person program | Program tuition, on a needs basis |
| Flight Grants (with Byojet, formerly Student Universe) | Grant toward airfare | Students whose main barrier is the cost of flights | Travel to and from the program |
| Climate Leaders Fellowship | Free | Students who cannot travel in person | A virtual global-learning program with Stanford |
What if a family cannot afford a Rustic Pathways program?
Families who cannot afford the full cost can apply for Service Program Financial Aid, with awards up to full tuition and flight grants through Byojet.
Rustic Pathways has awarded $3.6 million in scholarships and financial aid to date. Contact the admissions team before enrolling to discuss which option fits.
How a Travel Scholarship Opened a Door for Anghelina

Anghelina Severin, a teenager from Moldova, won a full Rustic Pathways Foundation scholarship to the Seoul Searching program in 2023. Traveling abroad alone is uncommon where she lives, and classmates doubted she would ever get the chance.
The award covered her tuition, and her family arranged the visa and paperwork that allowed her to go.
“When I saw it I just ran to my mom and said, ‘Oh my God, I have a full scholarship.’ The people were so friendly, and when you’re entering their place, you’re already part of their team.”
Anghelina Severin, Seoul Searching
In Seoul, she shadowed classes at a local high school, stayed overnight at Woljeongsa Temple, tried surfing for the first time, and shared Moldovan sweets with students from Taiwan, Australia, and the United States. She now hopes to study abroad in South Korea for her senior year.
Anghelina’s story is what Travel for All is built to make ordinary. Explore scholarships and financial aid.
Climate Leaders Fellowship: Global Learning Without a Passport
The Climate Leaders Fellowship is a free program that brings global education home. Students study history, climate change, and environmental sustainability without any travel cost, connect with peers worldwide, and build leadership skills across languages.
Rustic Pathways runs the fellowship in partnership with the Rustic Pathways Foundation and Stanford University Deliberative Democracy Lab, whose Associate Director, Dr. Alice Siu, shaped the fellowship curriculum.
For students who cannot travel, the fellowship opens the same kind of cross-cultural learning that Rustic Pathways programs deliver abroad, at no cost.
Expanding Access for the Next Generation of Travelers
Rustic Pathways is building more programs and partnerships to broaden access for students of all abilities and backgrounds. By combining affordability, individualized accommodations, and personalized support, Rustic Pathways works so that no student has to wait for a chance to learn through travel.
Every award, flight grant, fellowship seat, and accommodation plan serves one purpose: turning travel into a tool for education and growth that reaches more students each year.
