Accommodations

Students stay at a rustic outdoor retreat facility reserved exclusively for the Rustic Pathways group. Lodging includes cabins and dorm-style bunk rooms with shared bathrooms. Since we will be based in the mountains, you should expect basic amenities and a true camp-style setup rather than hotel comfort. The property also includes shared outdoor and communal spaces for group activities, reflection sessions, and evening programming.

The basecamp is about a 90-minute drive west of Denver International Airport, near Jamestown in the Colorado Front Range, with easy access to Boulder and Rocky Mountain National Park.

Service and Stewardship Projects in Colorado

Students will participate in hands-on stewardship projects during the program. These projects are designed to be age-appropriate, practical, and directly tied to caring for the places we explore.

Examples of possible stewardship work

Boulder County Parks & Open Space conservation project – Students will support trail maintenance, habitat restoration, invasive species removal, or other projects that help protect local ecosystems. Students will learn why this work matters and see the results of their effort in real time.

Chautauqua Park stewardship – After a morning hike, students will take part in trail work, habitat improvement, or other park support activities that help keep this high-use area healthy for wildlife and for the community.

Meals and Water During the Colorado Program

Meals will be prepared by your program leaders at our retreat center. Meals will be simple and nourishing, and they will fit active days outside. On a few days, the group will also eat meals in town during outings.

What meals look like

  • Breakfast: easy, filling options like eggs, oatmeal, pancakes or French toast, yogurt with fruit, and breakfast burritos.
  • Lunch: sandwiches or packed lunches on program days, plus a few in-town meals during Boulder outings.
  • Dinner: hearty group meals like spaghetti, tacos or burrito bowls, burgers, and teriyaki-style plates (with vegetarian options when needed).
  • Snacks: simple grab-and-go snacks like fruit, granola bars, chips, and trail-style snacks. We still recommend bringing a few favorite snacks from home.

Dietary requirements and allergies

We can usually accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other common dietary needs. Please list all dietary requirements and food allergies in your medical form so our staff can prepare. We also recommend that students bring a few safe snacks if they have strict dietary needs.

Water

Students will have access to safe drinking water at the retreat center and throughout the program. Each student should bring a reusable water bottle. For hikes and full-day outings, plan to carry about 34–68 fl oz (1–2 L), depending on heat and activity level.
