I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in this trip, and it was truly a life-changing experience. The program was well-structured, ensuring that every aspect of the trip was meaningful. From the moment you arrive they try to make you feel comfortable. Also the people I met I will never forget. I felt safe the whole time and the events were really fun. I went alone but I quickly made a ton of friends.

Accommodations for the Belize Teen Travel & Service Program

Students participating in the Belize: Caribbean Reefs & Mayan Culture (Spring Break) program will stay in two distinct locations, one on the coast and one in the mountains, providing a mix of adventure and cultural immersion. Each site offers safe, student-friendly lodging with group supervision, comfortable facilities, and access to basic amenities.

Caye Caulker

Students will stay in a centrally located hotel just 400 feet from the beach. Rooms are either dorm-style with bunk beds or double-occupancy rooms. The hotel has air conditioning and Wi-Fi access. This location offers easy access to snorkeling, reef exploration, and island activities.

T.R.E.E.S (The Toucan Ridge Ecology and Education Society)

For the majority of the trip, students will stay at the T.R.E.E.S basecamp at the foot of the Maya Mountains. Accommodations are in wooden bunkhouses with good natural ventilation and fans (no air conditioning). Shared showers and toilets are located in a detached facility, and Wi-Fi is available only in the main common area. This is a rustic, nature-based experience designed to connect students with Belize’s rainforest ecology.

Service Projects in Belize

Rustic Pathways partners with local organizations and community leaders in Belize to identify meaningful, conservation-focused service projects for students. While we strive to deliver all advertised projects, please note that some activities may shift depending on community needs and partner availability.

Types of Service Activities

During this program, students will engage in a variety of environmental and cultural service learning projects designed to deepen their understanding of Belize’s ecosystems and local communities. These may include:

  • Ethnobotanical Walk: Learn how indigenous plants are used for food, medicine, and cultural practices.
  • Wildlife Conservation Lecture & Fieldwork: Participate in hands-on conservation efforts with local experts.
  • Mammalogy Lecture & Tracking Workshop: Study native mammals and learn tracking methods used by researchers.
  • Bird Banding Lecture & Workshop: Observe bird banding techniques and assist with real data collection.
  • Ocean Academy Partnership: Support local education initiatives focused on marine preservation and sustainable development.

Meals and Water During the Belize Program

Students will enjoy a variety of buffet-style meals during their stay at the T.R.E.E.S base in the Maya Mountains. Meals are prepared with local ingredients and cater to both adventurous and familiar tastes.

Typical Meals

  • Breakfast: Eggs, bread, cereal, fresh fruit, milk, and juice
  • Lunch & Dinner: A mix of traditional Belizean dishes (chicken, pork, fish, rice, black beans, salads, pasta) and familiar meals like barbecues and burgers

Tap water is safe for activities like brushing teeth, but students will receive unlimited bottled water for drinking. To reduce plastic waste, each student should bring a reusable water bottle; this is a required packing item.

Packing List for Belize Teen Travel & Community Service Program

Here’s a recommended packing list based on feedback from past Rustic Pathways students and staff who participated in the Belize: Caribbean Reefs & Mayan Culture (Spring Break) program. Adjust it to fit your personal preferences and habits, especially for items like socks, underwear, and toiletries.

Important: Students should be able to carry all their own luggage. Throughout the trip, you’ll be responsible for moving your bag through airports, loading and unloading from vehicles, climbing stairs, and walking short distances on uneven ground.

Luggage Guidelines

  • Personal Item: A school backpack is ideal. You’ll use this as your daily bag for outings, service projects, and adventure activities.
  • Main Bag (carry-on or checked): A 40–50 liter duffel or travel backpack works best. Lightweight and comfortable to carry is key.

  • Use packing cubes or stuff sacks to stay organized.

Pro Travel Tips:

✅ Travel light. Pack only the essentials. We strongly encourage only a carry on size luggage.

✅ Make sure your luggage complies with TSA regulations, especially your carry-on.

✅ Leave your valuables behind. While traveling, it’s easier for things to get lost, stolen, or damaged. Keep any prized possessions safe at home.

✅ Pack clothes that are acceptable for hot weather. This includes appropriate footwear.

✅ Typically the temperature is between 75-85 degrees F.
