Wondering what it’s actually like to travel with Rustic Pathways? This guide gives you a real-world preview of the student travel experience: the rhythms, the support system, the living conditions, the safety framework, and what you’ll take home.
Each program sets its own schedule. Here is a real example: Costa Rica: Pura Vida Service, an 8-day service program near Arenal Volcano for students ages 14 to 18. Plans can change with group logistics, weather, and community needs.

Need proof of your service hours? Rustic Pathways usually sends it within 30 days of the trip. It documents service hours only and does not earn college credit.
Rustic Pathways program tuition varies by trip length and location. Program Tuition starts at $1,995 and covers what is on the itinerary in country: lodging, meals, ground transport, scheduled activities, and supervision. Flights to and from the program, insurance, the enrollment fee, and personal expenses are separate.
The program tuition does not include international airfare, medical insurance with coverage in the destination country (required), travel insurance (optional), passport and visa fees, or personal spending money. These costs are the responsibility of the student.
Most Rustic Pathways Student Travel programs are for students ages 14 to 18. Select middle school sessions serve ages 12 to 14, and Gap Year programs serve ages 17 to 22. Each program sets its own age range to maintain group compatibility and appropriate experience levels.
Yes, you can travel with a friend or sibling. During enrollment, you may request to be grouped or roomed together. Rustic Pathways will try to honor the request when possible, though participants are also encouraged to form new friendships.
Program Leaders and in-country staff supervise the group, with a median of 4.37 students per staff member and a maximum of 7:1. Program Leaders stay on site overnight and do nightly room checks.
