The Voice of Children

Why did you found the Cococu organization?

From a very young age I would go to rural communities and see that people were doing very little to protect the planet, and children were not being taken into account.

It was in 2016 that I was given the opportunity to start advocating for the jaguar, an umbrella and charismatic species that is in danger of extinction and inhabits the Huasteca Zone in San Luis Potosi.

In a school assignment we had to create an environmentally friendly project that would encourage children to save money. I presented some piggy banks made from reused material that, when purchased, were like adopting the animal in the wild for real. From there it escalated to the first collective effect which we called “Cococu“, and its first cause was the ‘Jaguar’.

Given the growth and impact it had on children and adults, I decided to found and legally constitute Cococu as a civil association to support and give voice to the actions of children.

What is Cococu’s mission and what does the organization consist of?

Our mission is that present and future generations have a better place to live, and the dynamic is that children share their ideas, knowledge and proposals for action to protect it.

Cococu is a solid foundation consisting of three easy, adaptable and scalable actions: Awareness (Concientizar), Knowledge (Conocer) and Care (Cuidar), hence its name in Spanish.

Our objectives are:

• supporting the use of natural resources
• the protection of the environment, flora and fauna,
• the preservation and restoration of the ecological balance,
• the promotion of sustainable development at a regional and community level

All this focused mainly on children, always accompanied by their parents and/or relatives, with the purpose of applying strategies of Sustainable Development built and approved by the community where they live.

These children become Cococu’s Child Ambassadors and raise awareness about the importance of caring for the environment in their locality, and they can also be the promoters of their own initiative.

Given its impact, the program has been visualized in the country and in the world, making children be heard, and their initiatives be taken into account to change our present and improve their future.

You run many different projects through Cococu, can you tell us about the different projects and the impact they are having?

With Cococu, the Jaguar project is the one with which we have had more reach. We have had 12,500 hectares voluntarily added to the program for its conservation.

About 1,500 children participate in the program and we have other “Cococus” (projects) that are in development, such as Cococu the Bee and the Chivizcoyo (endangered bush chicken), the Water Guardians, which are led by the children of the network, in addition to a club allied with the united nations foundation called “Girl Up” in which we work so that girls have better opportunities in all senses.

We also have 5 Cubiles de Cococu, which are tourist areas where we implement sustainable tourism and community development where the inhabitants voluntarily commit to protect nature. We receive tourists and students to show them and educate them about the local ecosystem and the sustainable use of ecosystem services. Visitors can also volunteer their time and knowledge for the development of the host community.

We have collaborated and formed alliances with companies, government entities, universities and international organizations, which has strengthened the program.

I also participate in local and international forums where I speak to the importance of children being taken into account, since around the world there are thousands of children taking action to improve our present-day and to be able to inherit a world in better conditions for future generations.

Can you describe how you balance your time? 

I lead a normal life even though the pandemic has blocked all the activities that I used to do with other children in person, now most of the activities are online.

I try to stay active, in the morning I do school activities and in the afternoons I dedicate some time to Cococu. Something super important in my free time I like to do is read and program.

Doing what I am passionate about helps me to have that balance and peace of mind, which motivates me to continue in this activism.

What have been the biggest challenges of founding and directing Cococu? What has been the most rewarding?

What has given me the greatest satisfaction is that the voice of children is being heard. I see this reflected in the participation of other children in local and international events and forums where they show what they are capable of doing with the projects they are carrying out in their communities.

This has led to the children’s perspective being taken into account as a basis for decision making and modification of public policies, for example in environmental issues, gender, education, arts, sports, among many others.

Regarding the challenges, some adults do not believe that children and young people are capable of changing the world, we still need to raise awareness and be taken into account as part of the society that we are.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like technology a lot, so in my free time I dedicate myself to programming things or small video games. I also like to read and write stories.

I also like to travel, meet people, and learn their customs and traditions. Although at the moment I can’t because of the pandemic, I hope to be able to do it soon.

What does the future hold for you and Cococu?

I think I still have many things to do to achieve my dream of having a better world where we can all live healthy and safe.

For this with Cococu I will continue to promote and support children so they can fulfill their dreams, grow the network of child ambassadors and protect our planet.

I will also give continuity to the development of the Cococu Cubiles, which due to the pandemic were less available to visit, in the next two years we hope to have 10 new cubiles.

What is your best advice for other students who want to start an initiative like this?

At this stage of the game, it is impossible to save the planet. For decades humanity has been selfish because they lost that mentality of when they were children.

The advice I can give is that whatever you do, whatever your dreams, no matter your age, the important thing is to value and protect what we still have left. Please do not let those post-apocalyptic movies become reality.

You can start with small actions, just like me, when I was 7 years old I started with all this. You can also achieve what you propose. Let nothing stop you. We are in this together, we can succeed.

La Voz de las Infancias

¿Por qué fundó la organización Cococu?

Desde muy pequeña iba a las comunidades rurales y veía que la gente hacia muy poco por proteger el planeta, y los niños no eran tomados en cuenta. Fue en 2016 que se me dio la oportunidad de empezar a actuar tomando como excusa el jaguar, una especie sobrilla y carismática que está en peligro de extinción y que habita en la Zona Huasteca en San Luis Potosí.

A través de una tarea escolar en la que teníamos que crear un proyecto amigable con el medio ambiente y que fomentara el ahorro infantil, yo presente unas alcancías hechas con material de reúso que al adquirirlas era como adoptar al animal en vida silvestre de verdad. De ahí escaló a el primer efecto colectivo el cual llamamos “Cococu”, y su primera causa fue el Jaguar.

Dado el crecimiento e impacto que tuvo en la niñez  y en los adultos, fue que decidí fundar y constituir legalmente a Cococu como asociación civil para respaldar y dar voz a las acciones de las infancias.

¿Cuál es la misión de Cococu? ¿En qué consiste la organización?

La misión es que las generaciones presentes y futuras tengan un lugar mejor para vivir, y la dinámica es que los niños compartan sus ideas, conocimientos y propuestas de acción para protegerlo.

Cococu es una base sólida que consiste en tres acciones fáciles, adaptables y escalables: Concientizar, Conocer y Cuidar, de aquí su nombre.

Con el objetivo de apoyar en el aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales, la protección del ambiente, la flora y la fauna, la preservación y restauración del equilibrio ecológico, así como la promoción del desarrollo sostenible a nivel regional y comunitario; todo esto enfocado principalmente a la niñez, siempre acompañados de sus padres y/o familiares, con el propósito de aplicar estrategias de Desarrollo Sostenible construidas y aprobadas comunitariamente que favorecen a la población de la zona donde habitan. Estos niños se convierten en la Niñez Embajadora de Cococu y concientizan sobre la importancia del cuidado del medio ambiente en su localidad, además ellos pueden ser los promotores de su propia iniciativa.

Dado el impacto, el programa ha sido visualizado en el país y en el mundo, logrando así que los niños sean escuchados y que se tomen en cuenta sus iniciativas para cambiar nuestro presente y mejorar su futuro.

Diriges muchos proyectos diferentes a través de Cococu, ¿puedes hablarnos de los diferentes proyectos y del impacto que están teniendo?

Con cococu el jaguar es con el que hemos tenido más alcance, tenemos 12, 500 hectáreas sumadas voluntariamente al programa para su conservación, alrededor de 1500 niños participan en el programa y  tenemos otros “Cococus” (proyectos) que están en desarrollo, como Cococu la abeja y el Chivizcoyo (gallina de monte en peligro de extinción), los Guardianes del Agua, que son liderados por los niños de la red, además de un club aliado con la fundación de las naciones unidas llamado “Girl Up” en el que trabajamos por que las niñas tengamos mejores oportunidades en todos los sentidos.

Además tenemos 5 Cubiles de Cococu, que son áreas turísticas donde se implementa el Turismo Sostenible y el desarrollo comunitario donde los pobladores voluntariamente se comprometen a proteger a la naturaleza y a recibir a turistas para mostrarles y educarles sobre el ecosistema local y el uso sostenible de los servicios ecosistémicos.

Hemos colaborado y formado alianzas con empresas, entidades gubernamentales, universidades y organismos internacionales, lo cual ha fortalecido el programa, además de participar en foros locales e internacionales donde pongo sobre la mesa la importancia de que la niñez sea tomada en cuenta, ya que alrededor del mundo hay miles de niñas y niños estamos tomando acciones para mejorar nuestro presente y poder heredar un mundo en mejores condiciones a las generaciones futuras.

¿Cuáles son sus responsabilidades? ¿Puedes describir cómo equilibras tu tiempo?

Llevo una vida normal a pesar de que la pandemia ha bloqueado todas las actividades que solía hacer con otros niños de manera presencial, ahora la mayoría de las actividades las tengo en línea. Trato de mantenerme activa, por la mañana hago actividades escolares y las tardes le dedico un tiempo a Cococu, y algo super importante en mi tiempo libre me gusta leer y programar.

Hacer lo que me apasiona me ayuda a tener ese equilibrio y paz mental, lo que me motiva a continuar en este activismo.

¿Cuáles han sido los mayores retos de fundar y dirigir Cococu? ¿Qué es lo más gratificante?

Lo que me ha dado mayor satisfacción es que la voz de las infancias está siendo escuchada. Esto lo veo reflejado en la participación de otros niños en eventos y foros tanto locales como internacionales donde demuestran de lo que son capaces de hacer con los proyectos que están llevando a cabo desde su comunidad, esto de lugar a que se tome en cuenta la perspectiva infantil como base en la toma de decisiones y modificación de las políticas públicas por ejemplo en temas ambientales, género, educación, artes, deportes, entre muchos otros.

Respecto a los retos, algunos adultos no creen que los niños y jóvenes seamos capaces de cambiar el mundo, aún falta hacer conciencia y que nos tomen en cuenta como parte de la sociedad que somos.

¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?

Me gusta mucho la tecnología, así que en mi tiempo libre me dedico a programar cosas o pequeños videojuegos, además de que me gusta leer y escribir historias.

Tambien me gusta viajar, conocer personas sus costumbres y tradiciones, aunque en este momento no se puede por la pandemia, espero pronto poder hacerlo.

¿Qué le depara el futuro a usted y a Cococu?

Creo que me quedan muchas cosas por hacer para lograr mi sueño tener un mundo mejor, donde todos podamos vivir sanos y a salvo, para esto con Cococu continuaré impulsando y apoyando a las infancias para que puedan cumplir sus sueños, crecer la red de niños embajadores y proteger a nuestro planeta.

También dar continuidad al desarrollo de los Cubiles de Cococu,  que por la pandemia se redujo el que se pudieran visitar, en los próximos dos años esperamos contar con 10 nuevos cubiles.

¿Cuál es tu mejor consejo para otros estudiantes que quieran poner en marcha una iniciativa como ésta?

A estas alturas del partido, es imposible salvar el planeta, durante décadas la humanidad ha sido egoísta por que perdió esa mentalidad de cuando eran niños, el consejo que les puedo dar es que hagan lo que hagan, sea cuales sean sus sueños, estos los realicen siempre pensando como niños, no importa tu edad, lo importante es que valores y protejas lo que aún nos queda, por favor, no dejes que esas películas post apocalípticas se hagan realidad. Puedes empezar con pequeñas acciones,  así como yo, que a los 7 años de edad comencé con todo esto, tú también puedes lograr lo que te propongas, que nada te detenga, estamos juntos en esto, éxito.
