★★★★★“I’m very glad I went, not only by myself, but to a place that’s far away. I’ve experienced a new level of independence. In Asia where the people are different, the culture is different, and the food is different, you’re just forced to try new things. It really gave me a better perspective of the world outside my little bubble.”
★★★★★“The entire experience with Rustic Pathways has been exceptional from start to finish: from information about trips we were considering, to the adventure itself. After each of her Rustic Pathways trips, my daughter is more open-minded and eager to experience circumstances outside of her comfort zone.”
★★★★★“Oliver really loved the program so much, we are thrilled with the incredible journey and care that all of you devote to our kids. Trying to raise a great global citizen who is connected in profound ways, it takes a village. Rustic Pathways is a big part of that picture.”

A wildlife conservation volunteer program places teens in active field research alongside trained scientists and local conservation staff. Rustic Pathways programs go beyond observation: students collect behavioral data, monitor nesting activity, assist with reef surveys, and contribute results to ongoing conservation projects. Programs operate in partnership with vetted local organizations in Thailand, Greece, Costa Rica, and Belize, among others.
Rustic Pathways wildlife and conservation programs start at $2,795 for 8-day programs and range up to $6,890 for 16-day multi-destination programs. All prices are all-inclusive: accommodation, meals, conservation activities, field equipment, in-country transport, and travel medical insurance. Airfare is not included unless noted. Financial aid and merit-based scholarships are available.
Yes, and the distinction matters. Rustic Pathways partners exclusively with certified, science-backed conservation organizations. The Thai Elephant Conservation Project works with a sanctuary following EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) ethical standards. Sea turtle programs use established research protocols recognized by IUCN. There is no riding, performing, or handling that compromises animal welfare.
No prior experience required. Students receive on-site training from field scientists before participating in any data collection or animal interaction. Most students arrive with curiosity and leave with skills. About 75% travel without knowing anyone else on the program, and the First Friend Method ensures no one starts alone.
