Participate in a variety of service projects and learn about different ways to support the local community while enjoying the relaxed and easy-going South Pacific lifestyle. Fijians have long believed strangers should be welcomed as long-lost friends and given the highest degree of consideration and hospitality. Experience the inviting culture of Fiji while giving back to our hosts through a combination of service initiatives at the Eco-Lodge. Each group’s projects will be different, as we work with different villages and communities.

Students love the connections they make with the local Fijian communities!

What Does a 9-Day Program Include?

A typical program. Daily activities are subject to change based on group logistics and weather.

1

Depart for Fiji!

Arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) where you’ll meet your Rustic Pathways flight leader, who will help get you checked in and through security before traveling with your group to Fiji. Get acquainted with fellow Rustic travelers before boarding your flight.
2

In Transit

Today is lost as you cross the International Date Line. Not to worry, though–you’ll get it back when you return.
3

Welcome to Fiji!

Bula! Arrive at Nadi International Airport (NAN) and meet your program leaders who will be with you for the duration of the program. Head to the eco-lodge and settle in, relaxing after your long flight. Join the group for an orientation discussion about the week ahead, expectations for your adventure, and an introduction to the local culture. This evening, participate in a formal sevusevu ceremony (a traditional welcoming ceremony) and begin to learn about the amazing country you are visiting. Dressed in your new sulu (traditional Fijian sarong or skirt), you will sit in a kava circle and begin to learn that it is more than just the world-renowned beaches that make Fiji special. The local staff will guide you through your first step of cultural understanding as you participate in this ceremony. Sharing in a kava ceremony while watching the sunset from a huge deck with new friends is the perfect end to your first day in Fiji. During your time in Fiji, you'll be staying at our South Pacific Eco-Lodge Base. Students will stay in small houses that sleep eight to ten on bunk-beds, separated by gender. Each house has an attached bathroom with solar powered hot water showers, sinks, and flush toilets.
4

The Fijian People and Your Projects

Friday will be your first full day of service work. Rustic Pathways has developed a wonderful relationship with the local people of Momi Bay and the larger Nadi area. Project work during the course of your program is focused around the six service initiatives we have undertaken at the eco-lodge. You will typically get involved in two projects during the course of the day, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. You can expect to spend time working in the local villages, tutoring students in English, getting involved with afternoon sporting events, and facilitating much-needed art and music activities. In addition, you might teach computer literacy classes to older youth and young adults or help a neighbor repair their roof or build a bathroom. You will also get involved in some environmental projects to help preserve the beautiful and fragile ecosystems here. Your service will be varied, interesting, challenging, and extremely rewarding and worthwhile. In the evenings, enjoy some of the beautiful natural and cultural wonders Fiji has to offer. The staff at the eco-lodge hosts meke performances (indigenous Fijian dances) and Indo-Fijian cultural nights where you can learn about the large Indian culture that exists in Fiji. Your days will be full of the exotic beauty that makes Fiji a top tourist destination, and opportunities to learn about the culture that created it.
5-6

Work and Wander this Weekend!

Participate in large group community service projects over the weekend. Generally, work on Saturday will involve projects that enable you to complete tasks at schools while students are not in their classrooms, or to work on larger projects that involve a whole village or community. Many of the local adults are able to participate and get involved after meeting their job obligations during the course of a normal working week. When your group is not doing service this weekend, your time will be spent enjoying the wonders that Fiji has to offer! On Sunday, you'll hop on a boat after breakfast for a day of exploring. Cruise around the islands that make up the nation of Fiji. Search for marine life while swimming or snorkeling in the water. Return to the Momi base house for dinner and then dive into a debrief discussion where you can talk about their experiences so far. Wrap up the day by gathering around a bonfire and enjoying time with your new friends.
7-8

More Exciting Projects and Wonderful Cross-Cultural Participation!

After a day of fun and sun, the focus of your next two days will be on service. Break into small groups each morning and spend the days on a variety of different initiatives. Get ready to teach, paint, plant, build, and share in the diverse and welcoming communities around the eco-lodge. Evenings are special at the Base! The staff will charm you into being outrageously silly or sincerely reflective. You will find that Fijians will inspire you to try both. On Tuesday, you'll also visit the Momi Guns battery site where you'll have unobstructed views of the Malolo Barrier Reef and the Mamanuca Islands. That night is also reserved for a weekly farewell ceremony. Take the time to reflect on your experiences and lessons learned, and to deepen ties to your new but very special friends.
9

Mud Pools & Moce, Fiji!

You'll start the day with one last breakfast at the Momi house and then travel west to Nadi to visit the mud pools. There you can soak in a mineral-rich mud pool and then rinse off in a thermal hot spring. Afterwards, it's pizza time, and then you can peruse the local market for souvenirs. As the day winds down, you'll go back to the house for dinner, packing, and your last group laughs. Your program leaders will take you to the airport for your flight home or to your next Rustic program as you say your goodbyes and reflect on your adventure. If you’re staying in Fiji, your program leaders will take you to your next accommodation to meet your new group. If you're continuing on to another Rustic Pathways destination, you’ll board a connecting flight to that country.
