Explore New Orleans’ African, colonial, and Native American roots through culture, identity, and community. Understand how the rebuilding conversation is changing from focusing on post-Hurricane Katrina development to other natural disasters, climate change, and new challenges facing the city. Learn about the region’s history, ecosystems, and stories during service and interaction with local community members. Hear traditional and modern music, try local dishes and delicacies, and understand what makes this city unique.

Arrive at Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) in New Orleans and meet your Program Leaders for the week who will be with you for the duration of the program. Head to the base house, settle in, and relax after your flight. Join the group for an orientation discussion about the week ahead, expectations for your adventure, and an introduction to the local culture. Enjoy your first taste of jambalaya and spend the evening watching and discussing a documentary about the city’s history and recovery. Welcome to New Orleans!
Your adventure kicks off in the vibrant French Quarter, renowned as the heart of New Orleans for its captivating history, architectural marvels, and lively atmosphere. Embark on a guided tour to unravel the intricate blend of French, Spanish, African, and Creole influences that shape the city’s identity.
Immerse yourself in the rich history of New Orleans as you learn about iconic landmarks like Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral, each holding a unique story within their walls. Feel the pulse of Creole culture and the enduring legacy of powerful musical influences, both past and present.
In the afternoon, investigate deeper into the city’s history by exploring one of its esteemed museums, taking a journey through exhibits that shine a spotlight on the diverse narratives woven into New Orleans’ fabric. Gain insight into the profound impact of slavery on the city and the nation as a whole, offering a moment for reflection on the complex layers of history.
After a full day of exploration, take a moment to unwind before indulging in an authentic New Orleans dinner, savoring the flavors of the region. Gather for a group discussion about your experiences so far, fostering deeper connections and insights into New Orleans’ rich past and present.
Optional Add-Ons: Visit a local plantation – Laura Plantation or Whitney Plantation – take an hour ride outside of New Orleans to visit one of the prominent plantations. Visiting one of these Plantations offers a profound journey into the complex history of the American South.
The Whitney Plantation stands as a poignant memorial to enslaved people, focusing on their lives, struggles, and resilience where restored slave cabins, authentic artifacts, and powerful memorials, fostering a deep understanding of the horrors of slavery and the resilience of those who endured it.
The Laura Plantation provides a contrasting perspective, showcasing the Creole culture and the lives of both the enslaved and the enslavers. Through guided tours and interactive exhibits, students gain insight into the intricacies of plantation life, the economic forces driving the institution of slavery, and the lasting legacies that continue to shape our society.
Overnight: New Orleans Base House or Hostel
Rise and shine, energized and prepared to lend a helping hand to grass-roots organizations committed to community support and rebuilding efforts in New Orleans. Gain insight into the multifaceted impacts of climate change on life in the Mississippi Delta as you engage in service initiatives, such as home rebuilding projects with partners like St. Bernard Project or Youth Rebuilding New Orleans.
During one of your lunch breaks, treat yourself to a memorable experience aboard a Steamboat River Cruise, where live music sets the tone as you cruise along the city’s iconic waterways, reflecting on the days spent immersed in New Orleans’ culture and community.
In the late afternoon, seize the opportunity to explore the city further, mingling with locals and discovering New Orleans’ vibrant spirit. Whether it’s sampling beignets at Cafe du Monde or indulging in other city favorites, your evenings are reserved for embracing the city’s renowned live music scene and savoring its culinary delights.
Come together for a post-service debrief, sharing insights and reflections on the meaningful experiences gained through hands-on work in the community, fostering deeper connections and understanding among your group.
This morning you will wrap up your service projects and prepare for an exhilarating journey into the Bayou. Experience the thrill of an airboat tour led by multi-generational native guides who will navigate you through the swamp lands.
Interact with alligators in their natural habitat and gain fascinating insights into the diverse array of plants and animals that inhabit these wetlands. Led by knowledgeable guides, immerse yourself in the beauty and mystery of the Bayou, ensuring an unforgettable experience.
On your final day, bid adieu to the vibrant atmosphere of the Big Easy. Before catching your flight, head to City Park for Rustic Ties, a meaningful activity designed to help you reflect on your experiences and the issues you’ve engaged with during the program.
Participate in this unique and powerful activity, capturing the memories and learning moments of your journey to share with your communities back home. With your Program Leaders by your side, take time to reflect on your adventure and the positive impact of your deeds as you head to the airport, saying your goodbyes and departing for home.
