Australia: Central Outback Indigenous Immersion is a 10-day customizable school group trip to Australia’s Red Centre, where students travel through the Outback, live with an Aboriginal community, and camp under the stars.

The trip runs from Yulara to Uluru and Kata Tjuta, onto Aboriginal homeland near Petermann, then north through Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges to Alice Springs. The program closes with 1 night in Sydney.

Rustic Pathways school group travel programs provide educational travel experiences that take learning beyond the classroom.

What Does a 10-Day Program Include?

A typical program. Daily activities are subject to change based on group logistics and weather.

1

Depart for Australia!

School groups fly from the United States to Australia on Day 1, and teachers travel with students on the same flights.
2

In Transit

The route crosses the International Date Line, which removes one calendar day and is why a 10-day program contains 9 numbered days.
3

G'day Australia!

The group clears customs in Sydney, connects to Ayers Rock Airport, and reaches Yulara the same day. First stop is the Anangu Cultural Centre inside Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, where the Anangu traditional owners present the site in their own words before students walk the base of Uluru and watch sunset over the rock.
4

Sunrise Camel Ride & Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Students ride camels across the desert at sunrise, then tour Uluru with a local guide. The afternoon hike is the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta, the group of sandstone domes west of Uluru.
5

Smoking Ceremony

Day 5 moves the group off the tourist route and onto Aboriginal homeland near Petermann, where a welcome smoking ceremony marks the group's arrival on country. Students learn traditional hunting, bush food, and bush medicine from community members, hear dreamtime stories around the campfire, and camp on country rather than at a commercial campground.
6

Kings Canyon Rim Walk

The Kings Canyon Rim Walk climbs the canyon wall to views over the Garden of Eden waterhole and the sandstone domes known as the Lost City. The group overnights at Kings Creek Station, a working station on the edge of Watarrka National Park.
7

West MacDonnell Ranges & Standley Chasm

The drive north through the West MacDonnell Ranges stops at Standley Chasm, a narrow gorge held and operated by the Western Arrernte community, and at Glen Helen Gorge on the Finke River.
8

The Red Centre to Sydney!

A flight from Alice Springs to Sydney closes the Red Centre portion of the program. The group walks The Rocks and Circular Quay, takes in the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, and closes with a farewell dinner and Rustic Ties.
9

Goodbye Australia

The group departs Sydney on the return flight home.
10

What's included in the price?

Included: Lodging, all meals, in-country transport, all activities, 24/7 staff. Not included: International airfare, medical insurance (required), travel insurance (optional), personal spending ($150–200).

Is travel insurance required?

Travel insurance is not included in the program tuition. Rustic Pathways recommends that families purchase travel insurance. Get a quote from our recommended provider →

Who supervises the students?

Rustic Pathways Program Leaders complete a four-month vetting process, and programs maintain a median of one staff member per 4.37 students (4.37:1), with no program exceeding 7 students per staff member (7:1). All Program Leaders are first-aid certified, and every program includes at least one leader with 3 or more years of field experience. Program Leaders range in age from 22 to 45.

Are rooms gender-separated?

Yes. Students room with same-gender peers. Staff stay in adjacent rooms.

What about medical emergencies?

All Program Leaders are first-aid certified. Nearest hospitals are mapped out in all locations. Our health & safety team reviews all medical forms before departure and works with families to plan medications, allergies, and dietary needs.

Can students contact home?

Yes. Rustic Pathways’ policy is that students can call, text, or WhatsApp anytime. Rustic Pathways is happy to defer to established school policies instead.

How do families stay informed?

Rustic Pathways sends daily photo updates throughout the program.

How big is the group?

Group size varies based on the school’s needs. Contact Rustic Pathways for a custom quote.

Will students have unsupervised time?

Structured independence with staff nearby. No unsupervised time in public areas.
