Korean Language Immersion in Seoul is a 15-day travel program designed for high school students ages 14 to 18. The program combines private Korean instruction in Hongdae with afternoons using it across Seoul. Rustic Pathways runs 2 other South Korea student travel programs, and Korean Language Immersion is the only one built around a language course rather than a tour.

What Will Students Experience?

Students on Korean Language Immersion experience Seoul as a classroom: private Korean lessons taught only to Rustic Pathways students, afternoons in the city practising what they learned that morning, a weekend of cultural programming, and a group capped at six students.

What Does a 15-Day Program Include?

A typical program. The order and selection of cultural activities may change based on availability, weather, tickets and group pacing.

Depart for Seoul

Meet your group and fly to Incheon International Airport (ICN). Students on the chaperoned group flight depart Los Angeles (LAX) together with a Rustic Pathways chaperone. Students flying independently, including those travelling from outside the United States, arrive at Incheon within the published arrival window and are met there. International airfare is not included in the program tuition.

Arrive in Seoul

Land at Incheon, meet your two Program Leaders, and transfer into the city. The rest of the day is for settling in and sleeping off the flight.

Orientation and First Look at Seoul

Orientation with your Program Leaders, then out into the city. First day of cultural programming, and the first chance to use whatever Korean you already have.
4-8

Korean Classes Begin

Private Korean classes in Hongdae, Monday to Friday. Roughly four and a half hours a day, taught only to Rustic Pathways students. Afternoons are Seoul, with your Program Leaders, using what you learned that morning.
9-10

Weekend in Seoul

No classes. Two days of cultural programming across the city. This is also the weekend the Rustic Pathways Tokyo to Seoul group arrives in Seoul.
11-14

Finish the Course

The remaining Korean instruction, Monday to Thursday, then out into the city each afternoon to use it. By now the classroom and the street are the same exercise. On the final evening the group gathers for Rustic Ties, our closing ceremony.

Depart South Korea

Travel to Incheon together. Students on the chaperoned group flight return to Los Angeles together. Students flying independently depart within the published departure window, arriving home the same calendar day they leave Seoul.

Total: 15 calendar days / 13 nights in Seoul. International flights are not included.

How Does Rustic Pathways Ensure Safety on Korean Language Immersion?

Rustic Pathways uses established safety, supervision, and risk management practices throughout the Korean Language Immersion program.

Staff Supervision

Rustic Pathways maintains a median student-to-staff ratio of 4.37:1, with no program exceeding 7:1.

24/7 Emergency Support

Families receive access to a 24/7 emergency number. Rustic Pathways staff responds immediately to emergencies and provides ongoing updates during active situations.

Medical Oversight

Rustic Pathways’ dedicated Medical Director, Dr. William R. Smith, is a board-certified emergency physician and U.S. Army Colonel with more than 20 years of wilderness medicine experience.

Dr. Smith is available to support Program Leaders and families with medical questions, treatment decisions, and incident escalation.

Transparent Incident Data

Rustic Pathways logs incident reports for all medical and behavioral issues during its programs.

In 2025, Rustic Pathways recorded 162 incidents across 2,238 travelers. Of these incidents, 142 (87.7%) were classified as GREEN (lowest severity).

Trained Leaders

Program Leaders pass background checks through Sterling, a First Advantage company, complete 40+ hours of in-person training (80+ hours total), and hold CPR and First Aid certifications.

Rustic Pathways’ core safety team members have completed Viristar’s 40-hour online Risk Management for Outdoor Programs course.

Local Response Planning

Rustic Pathways teams maintain lists of medical facilities for every major program location.

Rustic Pathways uses vetted, licensed, and insured ground transportation operators and prohibits night driving outside approved urban routes.

What Do Parents Ask?

Flights & Cost

How do flights work?

Students on the chaperoned group flight depart Los Angeles (LAX) together with a Rustic Pathways chaperone. Everyone else, including students travelling from outside the United States, books independently and arrives at Incheon (ICN) within the published arrival window, where Program Leaders meet them.

International airfare is not included in program tuition.

What's included in the price?

Included: All lodging, all meals, Korean tuition, in-country transport and airport transfers, all activities and entrance fees, 24/7 staff support.
Not included: International airfare, travel insurance, personal spending money ($150 to $200 per week).

Do you offer financial aid or scholarships?

Yes. Monthly payment plans are open to every family, and Rustic Pathways offers both need-based financial aid and merit scholarships. Explore scholarships and financial aid.

Is travel insurance required?

Travel insurance is not included in the program tuition and is not required, but Rustic Pathways recommends it. Medical insurance with overseas cover is required. Those are two different products and families often buy only the second.

What is the enrollment fee?

A one-time enrollment fee is charged when you enroll, separate from the program tuition. It covers enrollment processing, pre-departure advising and trip planning.

The fee is non-refundable after the first 24 hours.

What if my family has an emergency and we have to cancel?

March 31 is the date that matters. Cancel up to then and the program tuition is refunded, less the non-refundable enrollment fee and any airfare already booked. The enrollment terms carry the full schedule.

We know some things are outside anyone’s control. If your family faces a serious documented emergency, contact us; we review these situations individually and will do what we reasonably can to help.

Supervision & Safety

Who's supervising my child?

Rustic Pathways Program Leaders complete a four-month vetting process, and programs maintain a median of one staff member per 4.37 students (4.37:1), with no program exceeding 7 students per staff member (7:1). All Program Leaders hold current CPR and First Aid certification, and every program includes at least one leader with 3 or more years of field experience. Program Leaders range in age from 22 to 45.

This program runs with two Program Leaders for a maximum of six students, which is far below our 7:1 ceiling and the reason the group is small. Students live together in one Seoul guest house with leaders on site.

Are rooms gender-separated?

Yes. Students share rooms with same-gender peers in one Seoul guest house, with both Program Leaders staying in the same building.

What about medical emergencies?

Seoul has some of the best hospitals in the world and several run international clinics with English-speaking staff. Definitive care is minutes away, not hours. All Program Leaders hold current CPR and First Aid certification, and the nearest clinic and hospital are mapped for every location. Our health and safety team reviews all medical forms before departure.

Communication

Can I reach my child?

Yes, easily. South Korea has the most reliable mobile and Wi-Fi coverage of anywhere we operate. Students can call, text or use KakaoTalk and WhatsApp during free time. Parents can reach the Rustic Pathways 24/7 emergency line at any time.

How will I know they're okay?

Program Leaders post daily photo updates. With six students the updates tend to be more detailed than on a larger program.

What is the phone/device policy?

Students keep their phones and we do not confiscate them. We ask that they stay away during activities, lessons and shared meals, and students are welcome to take photos. Outside those moments they can contact home as often as they like.

Translation apps are fine and are not a substitute for the morning’s vocabulary, which is what the afternoons are for.

Group & Logistics

How big is the group and how old are the participants?

This program is capped at 6 students, ages 14 to 18. Rustic Pathways publishes a median of one staff member per 4.37 students (4.37:1) and no program exceeds 7 students per staff member (7:1).

Six students with two Program Leaders is the smallest group we run, and it is the reason the instruction works: roughly four and a half hours a day taught only to Rustic Pathways students.

Can international (non-U.S.) students join this program?

Yes. Rustic Pathways programs are open to students worldwide, with participants from 53 countries. Students travelling from outside the United States book their own flights to Incheon (ICN), arrive within the published window, and are met there by Program Leaders. Visa requirements vary by passport, so contact a travel advisor for guidance.

What is the accommodation like?

A guest house in Seoul for the length of the program, with shared rooms and common space, within reach of the language school in Hongdae.

Can friends room together?

Yes. Students share rooms in the guest house with same-gender peers and roommate requests are taken at enrollment.

Why is the group capped at six students?

Because it is a language course, not a tour. Six students and two Program Leaders means roughly four and a half hours a day of private instruction taught only to Rustic Pathways students, with enough teacher attention for each of them to be spoken to individually every session.

It also means the program needs to fill to run. A small cap is the reason the instruction works and the reason the group is unusually tight by the end.

Do students come with friends, or on their own?

Most come alone. With a cap of six students the group knows each other by the second day whether they intended to or not. Friends are welcome to enroll together.

Program Details

Can the program itinerary change?

This itinerary is what we intend to deliver and we work hard to deliver it. Programs run in real conditions, so activities can move for weather, health and safety, transport, site availability or local circumstances.

If plans change, the team adjusts the schedule around student safety and the purpose of the program. We will tell you what changed and why.

Will my child have unsupervised time?

Yes. Seoul ranked 12th in Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s 2026 Safest Cities for Travelers list, and students get structured free time in it, in pairs or threes, with Program Leaders reachable and a meeting point set. There is no unsupervised time outside agreed areas, and students are never alone with a single adult.

Can you accommodate dietary needs & food allergies?

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and common allergies are accommodated with advance notice and collected at enrollment.

One honest caveat: Korean cooking uses fish sauce, shrimp paste and sesame widely, and shellfish and sesame allergies need real planning rather than ordering around. Tell us early and the leaders will build the week’s eating around it.

How much spending money?

$150 to $200 per week is recommended for souvenirs and incidentals. Tipping is included in the program tuition. Korea is close to cashless, so a card that works abroad is more useful than won in an envelope.

Do we need a visa?

US citizens do not need a visa for a stay of this length in South Korea, but they do need K-ETA travel authorisation unless currently exempt. Requirements vary by passport, so contact a Rustic Pathways travel advisor.

Support

What if my child gets homesick?

Homesickness usually lands in the first few days. A 13-hour time difference from the US east coast makes it worse at first, because home is asleep when the day is hardest. Program Leaders know the pattern and check in daily. Read how we handle homesickness.

About This Program

Is Korean Language Immersion in Seoul Right for My Child?

Which students thrive on this program?
Students who want the language to be the point, not a souvenir. Classes run most weekday mornings and they are the spine of the trip. Complete beginners are welcome and are common. What matters is being willing to sit in a classroom on holiday, and then go out and use it badly in public until it stops being badly.
What will students do each day?
Mornings on class days are Korean, about four and a half hours, in Hongdae. Afternoons and non-class days are Seoul with two Program Leaders. Nine class days, 40 hours, 13 nights in one city.

Why Does Rustic Pathways Go to South Korea?

Seoul rewards a student who can read the signs. Hangul takes days, not months, and the difference between a student who can sound out a menu and one who cannot is the difference between visiting the city and being in it. Rustic Pathways has run programs in Korea for years and the cultural programming on this trip is drawn from what we already operate there.
