Explore WWII echoes in Balkans.
Though rarely mentioned in international textbooks, World War II had a profound and lasting impact in the Balkans. Join Rustic Pathways for a journey through Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, two former Yugoslav states, as you visit important World War II sites.Visit the Jasenovac Concentration Camp, and sits where the Battle of Kozara, Battle of Igman, Battle of Sutjeska, and Battle of Neretva were fought. Explore the natural beauty of the region, now integrating landmarks and memorials amongst the mountains, forests, and lakes. As with any great history lesson, conclude your journey in Mostar with hands-on interaction and workshop with the people and culture impacted through the generations by these conflicts. Be reminded of the hope and recovery of the human spirit. Leave this program with a new depth of understanding for the diversity and beauty of this region, the political and cultural echoes of WW2, and the reconciliation of community.

Meet up with your group at a pre-selected location at your home airport. Once everyone has arrived, check your bags and go through security as a group. From here you will board and depart for your international flight to Croatia. This first day is counted as a full day of travel because the standard travel time to this destination exceeds 12 hours. This may change depending on your departure location.

Land at Zagreb International Airport and explore the capital city of Croatia. Dive into the city’s vibrant atmosphere, learn about the history, culture and modern urban life and enjoy the views of the metropolis from the hilltop where the old city is located.

Start your day early and head out to Jasenovac Concentration Camp Memorial site. As you explore the site, you will come across remnants of the former camp, including barracks, watchtowers, and other structures. Learn how this camp was operated by the Independent State of Croatia starting in 1941, and held tens of thousands of people, including Jews, Serbs, Roma, Yugoslav Partisans, and others.
In the afternoon, visit the Kozara Memorial site. Learn how the battle of Kozara was a monumental engagement between German and Croatia’s Ustaša troops on one side, and Yugoslav Partisans on the other. Local tour guides will provide insights into the history of the Battle, the strategies employed by the opposing forces, and significance this battle had for Yugoslav Partisan resistance. The Battle of Kozara resulted in significant losses for Partisans, but it also served as a symbol of their determination to resist occupation and fight for freedom.

Start your day by familiarizing yourself with the city of Banja Luka, where you’ll discover a wealth of cultural treasures dating back to Roman times. As you explore its historic streets and landmarks, soak in the fascinating blend of influences that have shaped the city over centuries.
In the afternoon, you’ll depart on a scenic drive to Mount Igman, a site steeped in World War II history. Here, you’ll uncover the significance of a crucial battle that unfolded on these rugged terrain, showcasing the ingenious guerrilla warfare tactics employed by the Partisans against the formidable Nazi forces.
Gain insight into the resilience and determination of the Partisans as they triumphed against overwhelming odds, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape and the pages of history. Reflect on the lessons learned from this historic struggle as you conclude your exploration of Banja Luka and Mount Igman.
In the morning, continue on to Sutjeska National Park, renowned for its diverse flora and fauna. Hike trails through the mountains and take in breathtaking panoramas of the rivers, and forest around you..
In addition to its natural beauty, Sutjeska National Park is historically” significant: the Battle of Sutjeska” was one of the largest and most important engagements between Axis and Partisan forces. Today, memorials and monuments stand witness to this heroic battle where Partisans won despite great odds.
Once you’ve had your fill of this majestic landscape, continue on to Mostar and settle in at your accommodation for the night.

Start your day by exploring the Partisan Grand Memorial devoted to the fallen Partisans who lost their life liberating the city. Hike towards the summit of Fortica Hill and enjoy breathtaking views of Mostar connecting with the natural beauty that surrounds the city. On this hike, immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of the mountains and valleys where each step reveals a new wonder waiting to be discovered. The Mostar hiking experience promises unforgettable moments and amazing vistas that will leave a lasting impression on your journey.
Explore the city and witness historic landmarks of two civilizations that passed through the city, Austro Hungarian and Ottoman. These civilizations, once separated by time and space, now stand side by side, which through their shared history give a beacon of hope for a future understanding and mutual respect among peoples. From the iconic Stari Most bridge, a symbol of resilience and unity, to the intricately adorned mosques and grandiose Austro-Hungarian architecture, every corner of Mostar whispers tales of its storied past.
Begin your morning with an enchanting excursion to the captivating Kravice Lakes, cradled amid verdant landscapes. These cascading waterfalls create a tranquil haven for hikers and nature lovers, inviting exploration along scenic trails.
As students meander through the picturesque paths encircling the lakes, they’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramas at every corner, accompanied by the soothing symphony of rushing water. In the afternoon, journey back to Mostar for a cultural immersion, starting with a traditional Bosnian coffee workshop.
Wrap up the day by engaging with a local non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to reconciliation and rebuilding efforts following the tumultuous period of the Yugoslav Wars. This meeting offers valuable insights into the region’s ongoing journey towards healing and unity.
Visits the Neretva Battle Memorial Site and Tito’s Bunker, two iconic landmarks encapsulating Yugoslavia’s tumultuous history. At the Neretva Battle Memorial Site, situated amidst the serene Bosnian landscape. Pay homage to the brave soldiers who fought valiantly during World War II. Valuable battle lessons of military strategy, leadership, and tactics are studied in American Military Academies.
Continuing to Tito’s Nuclear Bunker, hidden beneath the rugged mountains, students will be surrounded by the clandestine world of Cold War politics. Understanding the history and legacy of these sites is crucial for comprehending modern-day conflicts and fostering dialogue towards peace and reconciliation. By preserving these landmarks and sharing their stories, we honor the past while also striving to build a more peaceful and inclusive future for generations to come.
At the end of each program, students reflect on their experiences and the issues they engaged with, and talk about how to apply this new understanding to their own worlds. During or after their closing discussion, groups participate in Rustic Ties, a unique and powerful activity that allows students to capture the memories and learning moments of their program to process and share with their communities back home.”

Learn about Split’s history through the ages and see the influences of the Romans, Venetians, Austrians, and Yugoslavian socialists that once ruled this small coastal town. Wander its historic markets where people buy fresh seafood and dine on handmade pasta and risottos. Hike to the top of the Marjan Hill for a panoramic view of the city and harbor. Join your group for a mid-trip discussion where you’ll begin to reflect on what you’ve experienced and learned so far.

One Day Add-On: Day Trip to Dubrovnik (Day 7)
Complete your tour of the Adriatic Coast as you head to the ancient city and the former republic of Dubrovnik, a stunningly-intact walled city. The UNESCO World Heritage site is most famous for appearing as Kings Landing in “Game of Thrones.” Tour the century-old streets of what was once the world’s most powerful maritime trading empire. Take a short drive across the border to Mostar for your first taste and sights of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
