Discover the New Era of Immersive Experiences: 25 Immersive Art Exhibits and Museums Around the World

It has taken me a while to admit, but I am not the type of person who fully appreciates visiting museums and art galleries. I have been to some of the world’s best, like the Louvre in Paris or the Met in New York City, but I can count the number of memorable moments on one hand. The artwork, the statues, the artifacts—they are fascinating, yet the impression quickly fades. Perhaps that was just me, and I would never be someone excited to visit a museum.

That would soon change when I discovered the new world of immersive experiences. The first immersive art gallery I visited was the Théâtre des Lumières (Theater of Light) in Seoul, South Korea. Stepping through its doors into the massive theater, I couldn’t help but chuckle in awe. I had left my world behind. Frankly, I had no idea who Gustav Klimt was or how he revolutionized art in Vienna. It didn’t matter. As his and others’ artwork unfolded before me across the 70-foot walls and through every nook and cranny, I was captivated. I knew this experience would be something I would remember.

I am not alone, either. Studies, including one on immersive virtual reality in museums, have shown that technologies like VR improve visitor satisfaction and increase the likelihood of return visits. More museums are turning to these immersive technologies to enhance their exhibitions. Also, art galleries around the world are reimagining blank spaces into whole new realities. These experiences are redefining visual art forms and information sharing. In this guide, I have carefully curated 25 of the best and must-visit immersive experiences available globally in 2024.

What Are Immersive Experiences?

An immersive experience involves using technology and the surrounding environment to transport you into a new, simulated world. Immersive technologies like AR, VR, and projection mapping help change your perception and make you feel as if you are a part of a different reality. Immersive experiences can include using a VR headset to meet Disney characters firsthand, or watching classic paintings come to life on the walls around you. Technologies used to create immersive museums and art exhibitions include:

  • Virtual Reality (VR): Headsets, like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, create digital environments. These environments are separated from the real world.
  • Augmented Reality (AR): Uses your smartphone or AR glasses to display digital content in the real world. Enhances, but does not replace reality.
  • Mixed Reality (MR): Connects both VR and AR to allow you to see and interact with both real and digital objects.
  • Projection Mapping: Systems of projectors turn everything into a screen. Project videos on all types of objects to bring the whole room alive.
  • Digital Displays: Specialized displays go beyond traditional screens, using touch panels and creative LED setups to enhance interactivity and visual engagement.
  • Audio and Sensory Equipment: Technologies like spatial audio (3D audio) and haptic feedback are used to further the immersion process.
A continuum line graphic representing the spectrum of reality technologies used in immersive experiences. The far left is labeled 'Real Environment,' progressing to 'Augmented Reality (AR),' then 'Augmented Virtuality (AV),' and concluding on the far right with 'Virtual Environment.' The line visually indicates the transition from fully real environments to completely virtual ones.

Types of Immersive Content: From Art Exhibits to Virtual Realities

The possibilities of immersive technology are endless and they can be used in various ways. Listed below are the types of experiences we included in our list:

  • Immersive Art and Digital Galleries: These are places where art is displayed digitally. Using large-scale projectors or other digital tools, artwork is brought to life in a whole new way. Imagine walking into a room where the walls, floors, and even chairs are all alive with the art of Leonardo Da Vinci or Gustav Klimt.
  • Extended Reality (XR) Experiences: This type of experience creates new digital realities with AR, VR, and MR. They include things like wearing a headset to explore an ancient archeological site, or watching skeletons come to life through your phone’s screen.
  • Integrated Immersive Environment: These are spaces where the environment itself becomes a part of the experience. They integrate a virtual environment with the physical environment so that it feels like being transported to the surface of the moon or to an alien world.
  • Interactive and Participatory Art: Ever wanted to be a part of an art piece? Here, you must take part to complete the art. For example, a digital display of flowers that continuously bloom and fade away depending on the interaction of the viewers.
  • Experiential Immersive Centers: These are spaces, powered by immersive technology, focus solely on your experience. They can be entirely virtual reality, or a combination of environmental props and digital aids. Experiential spaces take you on an adventure, like exploring the Lost City of Atlantis.

Can VR Replace the Real Experience?

The consensus so far is no. When Hyunae Lee and her team studied immersive virtual reality in museums, they found evidence that virtual field trips do not replace a real experience. Yet, this question also misses the point. We are never going to be able to walk inside Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings or take a stroll through the ancient Joseon Dynasty in South Korea. These worlds have never or no longer exist. The real value of these VR and other immersive tech experiences is to transport you to a whole new world and a whole new perspective. So, VR might not be able to replace direct, real experiences, but it opens the door to so many new possibilities.

“The role of an art centre is to decompartmentalise, and that is why digital technology is so important in twenty-first-century exhibitions. Navigating the Nuances of Immersion

Immersive vs. Interactive Art: Understanding the Difference

The line between immersive art and interactive art is not always clear. Not to mention they are often used simultaneously. The difference between the two is that immersive art uses the senses to transport the viewer into the artwork. On the other hand, interactive art requires the participation of a viewer to complete the artistic experience. They both can use digital technologies to create the experience. An example of immersive art is a projection mapping theater like at the Théâtre des Lumières. On the other hand, an interactive art experience is like the light floor at WNDR museum which creates visual artwork only when you are dancing on the mirrored floor.

What is the difference between Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR)?

It can be hard to understand the differences between Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). VR immerses users in a fully virtual environment. It cuts off the physical environment to replace it with a digital one, usually with a head mounted display. AR technology overlays virtual content on the real world. It enhances, but not replaces, your view of your surroundings. For example, you might use the AR camera on Pokémon GO to see Pikachu sitting on your couch. MR combines elements of AR and VR. It merges real and virtual worlds to make new environments. In them, physical and digital objects exist and interact in real time. Put more simply:

  • AR adds to reality,
  • VR replaces reality, and
  • MR merges real and virtual together

The center icon represents Mixed Reality (MR), depicting a person wearing a headset and interacting with a digital interface overlaying the real environment. The rightmost icon illustrates Virtual Reality (VR) with a person wearing a VR headset completely immersed in a virtual environment. The terms 'Augmented Reality (AR),' 'Mixed Reality (MR),' and 'Virtual Reality (VR)' are labeled beneath each corresponding icon.

How Immersive Technologies Are Shaping the Future of Entertainment

Immersive technologies go far beyond museums and art exhibits. They are reshaping how we connect with the world. For example, VR concerts put you right in the front row for your favorite performers, so close you can touch. VR documentaries, like Alex Honnold: The Soloist VR, make you feel like you are hanging off 1,000-foot cliffs. I will be happy to do that only through a VR headset.

Also, augmented reality is improving tourist experiences by allowing visitors to see historical sites and landmarks in new ways. More than just entertainment, these technologies will influence many parts of our daily lives, including immersive learning environments, healthcare, dining, and even online shopping. Advances in skin electronics could soon add haptic feedback to everyday digital interactions, making these virtual encounters more realistic. These developments hint at a future where digital and physical realms blend seamlessly, enriching our sensory experiences. However, it might become more important that we work towards disconnecting from our technologies every now and then.
