Step off the beaten path and dive into a unique Portuguese adventure! You’ll begin your journey with surf lessons on beautiful beaches, and engage in meaningful marine conservation efforts. Each day unveils new experiences, from exploring Lisbon’s vibrant streets and savoring local delicacies to discovering a breathtaking natural park that blends coastal beauty with rugged landscapes. Immerse yourself in the charm of a colorful beach town, and journey to a fairytale palace where enchanting forests create a magical backdrop.

Usually, I try to stay in my comfort zone and I don’t do anything outside of the box. But doing Rustic Pathways helped me to open up and be someone who is new and outgoing. I want to help share that feeling and experience with students and peers my age. Going on a Rustic trip was the best decision of my life, and I want other people to help make that good decision and go on the best trip of their entire lives.

Program Profile
Program Profile
Portugal is one of those places where you can truly slow down and connect with both the people and the land. In Lisbon, you’ll get to know the rhythms of daily life and the stories that shape the city. Along the coast, you’ll feel how surf culture is a part of everything—connecting you to the ocean and the way it influences the people who live there.

Packing the right gear (and the right amounts) is the first step to an incredible travel experience. Follow these tips to pack like a pro:

Travel light. Pack only the essentials. You’ll need less than you think!
Consider no checked bag. We strongly recommend that you consider packing only a carry-on size bag. This prevents your luggage getting lost or separated from you, keeps your bag manageable, and helps you be more mobile on your travel day.
Bring the right clothes. Pack clothes that are culturally appropriate for your destination and acceptable for service projects. This means bringing long shorts (think Bermuda and basketball shorts), t-shirts with sleeves to cover shoulders, and appropriate footwear.
Leave your valuables behind. While traveling, it’s easier for things to get lost, stolen, or damaged. Keep any prized possessions safe at home.
Check with TSA. Make sure your luggage complies with TSA regulations, especially your carry-on.
Extra paperwork? If you need additional forms filled out to get credit for your service hours, no problem! Bring these forms with you so they can be completed in-country.
Remember the Big 3: Water bottle (empty & fill after security), rain jacket, closed-toe shoes
