16-year-old Luis Alberto May Cua is the president and founder of Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán.
Luis of Hunucmá, Yucatan, Mexico became concerned with the amount of trash he was seeing on the street and cleaned it up with a group of friends. He next took it a step further and created the Yucatan Environmental Meeting (Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán) – a group dedicated to conservation and environmental awareness.
Since, the organization has led clean-ups in neighborhoods and beaches, collaborated with other environmental groups and made presentations to different schools and communities. Luis also works with elementary school children to educate them about the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
Luis’ efforts were acknowledged with a diploma from the state’s Secretary of Sustainable. He is next working on persuading local office candidates to address environmental concerns.

Why did you start the organization Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán (Yucatán Environmental Encounter)?
Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán began when a group of friends and I went out to visit the city of Hunucmá and we saw many makeshift garbage dumps, burning of garbage, contamination in the streets, among other things.
From here, I commented that we should start a small group that can help raise awareness among many people to change their habits and regulate the pollution that is happening. We started with small workshops in a primary school focusing on the use of the three R’s and little by little we progressed until we reached new educational levels.
More than anything, Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán was founded by a feeling of guilt because I was also part of the group that did not think or do something to help the environment. I wanted to contribute my grain of sand to promote and raise awareness among more people, from the young, to the adults, and elderly.
What is the mission of Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán?
The mission of Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán is to promote the right to a healthy environment. We raise awareness, encourage, create awareness of a culture of caring for the environment and boost sustainability.
What has the organization achieved?
It has had a positive impact both in the city of Hunucmá and in the state.
It has generated the interest of people to join the movements and campaigns that we do. Each event that we do year after year, people have become more involved and they are raising awareness themselves and creating habits to reduce their pollution.
As a founder, what do your responsibilities include? Can you describe how you balance your time?
As founder, I have the responsibility to ensure that Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán continues to grow, continues to instill the right to a healthy environment, sustainability and, above all, to seek a safe future for all.
I have learned to be autonomous and make good decisions for the growth of my team and the group (association).
I have learned to divide my time, thanks to the teachers and principals who have always supported me by giving me permission to go out or allowing me to miss school without affecting my standing as a student. They have granted that flexibility so that my classmates can also believe in themselves and see their potential and use their hobbies toward something positive.
What have been the biggest challenges in founding and running the Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán? What is the most rewarding?
The creation of Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán brought many challenges since many did not believe in me and many ignored me. Many sought to set traps for me or attempted to destroy my position all while trying to keep themselves in the association.
Many times our economy was not favorable. As a team we contribute the economic resources or even I myself have to contribute money, and many times that affects us in different ways, such as not having a mode of transportation.
And the most gratifying thing is to see that over the years and months you create awareness. People are already interested in the cause and are looking to join the events and find campaigns that they can carry out.
The joy that comes from children being able to talk about pollution and how to reduce it – there is no small job when you really want to make that change. That is the most rewarding.
Every moment lived and gained is gratifying because I do it with love and eagerness to improve the environment from my community, creating awareness and much more.
What is your best advice for other students who want to launch an initiative like this?
Do it and if nobody pays attention in the first event or publication then don’t get the idea that nobody cares, because little by little they’ll gain the confidence and vision from many people.
Believe in yourselves and do it, do not be afraid to fail, we all fail in the first attempt but above all we rise.
What do you do in your free time?
Publish official information about the events and happenings that happen in our state and give information about climate change.
I like to go out and tour the city, hang out with my friends and be with my animals. I enjoy being with my family. I like to go out and visit towns.
What does the future hold for Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán and the Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán team?
Many good things, like more activities in person. Important events and many topics to teach and share to raise awareness.
We hope that soon our registration will be successful and we will have new material.

¿Por qué iniciaste la organización Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán?
Encuentro ambiental Yucatán inicio cuando con un grupo de amigos salimos a recorrer la ciudad de Hunucmá y vimos muchos basureros clandestinos, quema de basura, contaminación en las calles, entre otras cosas.
De aquí, les comenté que iniciamos un pequeño grupo que pueda ayudar a concientizar a qué muchas personas cambien sus hábitos y regulen la contaminación que realizaban, en una escuela primaria iniciamos con unos pequeños talleres sobre el uso de las tres erres y poco a poco avanzando asta llegar a nuevos niveles educativos.
Más que nada Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán fue fundada por el sentimiento de culpa ya que, yo igual fui parte del grupo que no pensaba ni hacía algo para ayudar al ambiente y quince aportar mi granito de arena para promover y crear conciencia a más personas desde pequeños asta grandes y adultas.
¿Cuál es la misión de Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán?
La misión de Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán es promover el derecho a un ambiente sano, concientizar, fomentar, crear conciencia de una cultura del cuidado del ambiente y impulsar la sustentabilidad.
¿Qué ha logrado la organización?
Ha tenido un impacto positivo tanto como en la ciudad de Hunucmá como en el estado.
Por qué si ha generado el interés de las personas a unirse a movimientos y campañas que hacemos, cada evento que año tras año hacemos la gente se ha involucrado más y van creando ellos mismos la conciencia y crear ya los hábitos de reducir su contaminación.
¿Qué incluyen sus responsabilidades? ¿Puede describir cómo equilibra su tiempo?
Como fundador tengo la responsabilidad de velar por Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán para que siga creciendo, siga inculcado el derecho a un ambiente sano, la sustentabilidad y sobre todo a buscar un futuro seguro para todos.
He aprendido a ser autónomo y tomar buenas decisiones para el crecimiento de mi equipo y de la agrupación (asociación).
He aprendido a dividir mis tiempos, gracias a los maestros y directores que siempre me han apoyado dándome permiso de salir o permitiendo que falte a la escuela sin afectar mi calidad de estudiante, han dado ese concentimiendo para que busquemos que mis compañeros igual creen ellos mismos sus posibilidades y utilicen sus pasatiempos en algo positivo.
¿Cuáles han sido los mayores desafíos para fundar y ejecutar Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán? ¿Qué es lo más gratificante?
La creación de Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán, trajo muchos desafíos ya que muchos no creyeron en mi, ya que muchos me ignoraron, ya que muchos buscaron ponerme trampas o tener atentados para destruirme del cargo y quedarse esas personas la agrupación.
Muchas veces nuestra economía no fue la favorable ya que los recursos económicos nosotros como equipo lo ponemos o incluso yo mismo tengo que poner dinero y muchas veces esos nos afecta o no tener vehículo para trasladarnos.
Y lo más gratificante es ver qué al paso de los años y meses creas conciencia y las personas ya les interesa ya buscan como unirse a los eventos y campañas que realizando.
La alegría de que los niños ya sean capaces que hablar sobre la contaminación y como reducirla, no hay trabajo pequeño cuando en verdad se quiere hacer ese cambio.
Eso es lo más gratificante.
Cada momento vivido y ganado es gratificante por qué lo hago con amor y muchas ganas de sacar adelante al ambiente desde mi comunidad, creando conciencia y mucho más.
¿Cuál es su mejor consejo para otros estudiantes que quieran lanzar una iniciativa como esta?
Que lo hagan y si nadie les hace caso en el primer evento o publicación que no hagan la idea que a nadie le importa, por qué poco a poco Irán obteniendo esa confianza y esa visualización de muchas personas.
Crean en ustedes mismos y haganlo no tengan miedo de fallar que todos fallamos en el primer intento pero sobre todos nos levantamos.
¿Qué haces en tu tiempo libre?
Publicar información oficial sobre los acontecimientos que pasan en nuestro estado y dando información sobre el ya cambió climático.
Me gusta salir y recorrer la ciudad. Me gusta estar con mis amigos. Me gusta estar con mis animales. Me gusta estar con mi familia. Me gusta pasear. Me gusta conocer los pueblos.
¿Qué le depara el futuro a Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán y al equipo de Encuentro Ambiental Yucatán?
Muchas cosas buenas, más actividades ya presenciales.
