New Orleans Packing Guide

Weather: The weather of New Orleans is very hot and humid during the summer. The temperatures range during the day from to mid to upper 80’s and lower 90’s. At night, the temperature falls to the low 80’s or upper 70’s.

Luggage Restrictions: Students should bring one carry-on and one checked luggage weighing no more than 50lbs/25kg.

Laundry: Students will have access to laundry at the base house.


A school backpack or something of similar size is ideal for a carry on. You can pack everything you need for your travels in it, and then use it as a day back on the program.
Pro Tip: Put money and other valuables in a secure place that is not easily accessible.

Checked Luggage

Students are stationary for the entire trip. A roller suitcase, duffle bag or traveler’s backpack will work for luggage.



Sneakers or boots for service, flip flops or sandals for walking around. Students can also bring Vans, Keds, Converse or other types of shoes for walking around. If you don’t have work boots or don’t want to bring them, no problem; make sure the sneakers you bring are sturdy. Also, everything will get dirty at the service sites. It’s recommended that you bring old shoes and clothes for work days.


Bring your socks and underwear–enough for two weeks.



A rain jacket is important for seasonal rainstorms that pop up in the afternoons and a light hoodie is good for when the AC is a bit too powerful.



Students should bring shorts, skirts, dresses and one pair of pants. The weather is very warm during the day. Students will wear shorts during community service. Running shorts, basketball shorts or longer jean shorts are great for work sites. While exploring the community, students can wear normal street clothes. All shorts or skirts must be an appropriate length. Some students may feel more comfortable in pants during the down time or at the work site. Please note, that the weather is hot and students may find pants uncomfortable but may be nice to have when bugs/mosquitos are present.



Students should bring tank tops, t-shirts and a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt for lounging the in house. While on work sites, students should wear t-shirts or thick strapped tank tops. While in the base house, the air conditioning can feel cold. Students may want to bring a sweatshirt or zip up hoodie.

Pro Tip: The restaurants and museums are often very cold due to the air conditioning and the temperature outside is very hot. It is always a good idea to carry your rain jacket/hoodie to keep you warm inside local buildings.



Students will have the opportunity to go swimming at a local pool. We ask that bathing suits be “family appropriate” and suggest tops that are more modest (see above).



This gear is essential for your program, don’t forget it! You should bring either a fitted sheet for a twin sized bed and blanket or a sleeping bag. It is also a good idea to pack a headlamp for night time reading in your bed.



These are most of the essentials, but check the packing list for items not included. Bring travel-sized products; you just need enough to get you through two weeks, not two months.
Pro tip: Pack toiletries in resealable bags or a lined toiletry bags to prevent drama in case something leaks. Also, all experienced travelers come with a pair of ear plugs. DON’T FORGET YOUR MEDICATION.


A few more packing tips:

  • Travel light. Pack only the essentials. You’ll need less than you think!
  • Leave your valuables behind. While traveling, it’s easier for things to get lost, stolen, or damaged. Keep any prized possessions safe at home.
  • Check with TSA. Make sure your luggage complies with TSA regulations, especially your carry-on. Useful tip: Pack an empty water bottle and fill it up after security.
  • Extra paperwork? If you need additional forms filled out to get credit for your service hours, no problem! Bring these forms with you so they can be completed in-country.
