New Orleans

Situated on the edge the Mississippi River and the mighty Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans has strong French, Spanish, African, and Native American roots. Learn about the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and help with the ongoing Katrina relief effort by assisting with home construction projects and interact with local families. New Orleans after Katrina is a useful case study to consider how governments and communities respond to natural disaster. Engage with relevant stakeholder organizations on the ground and reflect on the critical issues facing the communities affected by Hurricane Katrina. After service, explore the French Quarter, try traditional local foods, and take a swamp tour before heading home.

After my service trip, I realized that I don’t need to travel to far away places to help, I can also do that within my community and country. I now am more aware of what issues my own community is facing and how and what I can help with. I volunteer and fundraise even more now in my community and hope to continue to do so.
