Rustic Pathways offers more than 100 programs in 20 countries and below are a few examples of new 2016 offerings for high school students:
Viva la Cuba! Culture and Conservation: Students will enjoy an amazing cultural exchange in the Cuban cities of Havana and Trinidad. This program is tailored for those who are passionate about environmental conservation. Students will travel by horseback into the famous Charco Azul lagoon where a reforestation project awaits with local park rangers, sleep under the stars after a waterfall hike, get their hands dirty with local farmers while learning about their sustainable practices, and experience youth culture in town with plenty of dancing, food, and new friends. The program cost is $4,995 plus international airfare for summer 2016 departures.
Off the Map: Alaska: Students will become true wilderness adventurers in America’s last frontier. A visit to Denali National Park will showcase the incredible views of Alaska before students head out on the camping trip of a lifetime. Students will learn survival skills from a wilderness guide, build shelters, make fires, and learn to live off the land. The program includes a thrilling whitewater rafting trip down Six Mile Creek, where students will see diverse wildlife and hike to spots with views of stunning glaciers. The program cost is $4,295 plus airfare for 2016 summer departures.
Peru by Backpack: Students on this program will experience Rustic Pathways most independent programs by becoming real-life backpackers and planning meals, housing, and travel arrangements while trekking across the diverse Peruvian terrains. Cascading waterfalls, small mountain towns, and locals will create challenges and eye-opening experiences as students make their way to each destination, whether it’s a desert island or the mysterious Nazca Lines. Embark on a three-day trek into the Andes, explore Machu Picchu, sleep under the stars, and gear up for the unknown. The program cost is $5,295 plus international airfare for summer 2016 departures.
Epic Outback: This is how it all began for Rustic, 33 years ago. In 2016 Rustic Pathways is getting back to its roots and invites students to go rustic on this two-week service adventure. Students will travel in 4x4s, drive through rivers, discover gorges, swim in hot springs, bask under waterfalls, and see jumping crocodiles. Students will camp under spectacular stars, get to know Aboriginal kids through cultural exchange, help rehabilitate sick and injured wildlife and hang out with kangaroos, wallabies, birds, cows and horses on a working cattle ranch. There will also be opportunities to learn from local Aboriginals how to throw a boomerang, play the didgeridoo and throw spears. The program cost is $4,495 plus international airfare for summer 2016 departures.
African Wildlife Conservation: This is an incredible opportunity for the most passionate of animal lovers and aspiring biologists. Rustic Pathways has partnered with the global nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute and their youth-led community action program, Roots & Shoots, to allow students to sample vegetation, plant trees in a local nursery, and learn Swahili from Tanzanian peers. Students will travel into the heart of Gombe National Park in search of chimps for a game of “how many chimps did you see?” and raise awareness to protect the land’s wildlife. The program cost is $3,895 plus international airfare for summer 2016 departures.
Additional new programs will be offered in Cuba, Australia, Cambodia, China, Laos and Dominican Republic. For more information about Rustic Pathways 2016 programs call 800.321.4353 or visit rusticpathways.com.
