This summer more than 5,000 high school students from around the world will travel with us to 19 different countries! From running summer camps for local youth in the Dominican Republic, to caring for elephants in Thailand, or whitewater rafting in Costa Rica, our students and staff are about to create some incredible #sorustic moments. Each week we’ll share some of their photos on our blog to help you see what’s happening on Rustic programs around the world.
To kick off Rustic Summer 2017, this week we’re sharing our favorite photos from Program Leaders around the world. Click on each staff member’s to learn more about what’s going on in the picture and see what Rustic looks like from their perspective!

“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.” – John Steinbeck

Touring around Vientiane today, the capital of Laos. The city itself seems to come alive in many forms. From the fast paced traffic that never seems to end, the monks who stroll about their temples, and the street markets that stretch as far as the eye can see; there are never enough hours in a day to explore as much as you’d wish you could!

This is JAKE (Hi Jake). He’s my awesome co-leader for the summer. Here he is workin’ the sulu (sarong) at sunset look in Nasivikoso village, one of the places we’ll be bringing students this summer. They’ll experience Fijian culture firsthand with homestays, kava ceremonies, service at the school and interacting with all of the beautiful local people. We were warmly received with big bula smiles, and said farewell at the end of our stay with the sound of singing voices and guitar strums filling the fresh air as we hobbled away in our carrier trucks. It’s only been two weeks since we’ve arrived in country but the immense JOY, hospitality, and warmth of Fijian culture is truly unmatched. So pumped for the next 8 weeks!

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kennedy has always loved traveling. Her professional background in publishing and photography have led her to discover the power in storytelling, and how it can facilitate a more empathetic understanding of the world around us. Kennedy interned for Rustic's Marketing Team while she was studying English at UC Berkeley. During study breaks, she's usually found hiking, listening to podcasts, or training for her next half-marathon.
