Service Scholarship (Financial-Need Based)

In 2016, 30 percent of Service Scholarship applicants were granted a scholarship. Competition is high, so put thought, time, and care into letting us know why you’re the ideal candidate in your application. Triple check for spelling and grammar errors! Tell us why you’re different from other candidates–what makes you unique?

Pro tip: Start fundraising now! Several students have successfully fundraised for their programs, and they are the first to say how rewarding, yet challenging, the process is.

At this time, we do not offer deferrals on scholarships. Please apply for a scholarship with the intention that, if awarded, it will be applied to your travel experience in 2017. When applying for a scholarship, please understand that your spot cannot be held on a specific program. Your application does not guarantee a scholarship, nor does it guarantee a spot on your first choice program.

We will notify all applicants of their status by March 24th, 2017.

Required Materials

  • Digital Copy of Household Income Statement
  • Two Short Essay Responses
    • Essay 1: Why have you selected this specific service program? Take this opportunity to tell us about your current school, extracurricular, or volunteer experiences and how these have shaped your program choices and demonstrate how you will positively contribute to a Rustic Pathways program. (limit: 1500 Characters including spaces)
    • Essay 2: We award this scholarship as an investment in you. How will you, in turn, invest in your community? (limit: 1500 Characters including spaces)

Deadline

The application deadline for the 2017 Service Scholarship is March 3, 2017. Scholarship recipients will be notified on March 24, 2017.

Since the application must be completed in one sitting, we recommend that students prepare their essays beforehand.

Estimate Your Financial Contribution

Students and families must be active participants in this process and fund raise throughout the year to meet their estimated financial contribution. To estimate your financial contribution, consider the airfare (see below), visa, spending money, and vaccination costs associated with your selected program country. Start fundraising…. NOW! We will notify all applicants March 24th, 2017. Check out our fundraising resources.

  • Eligibility Requirements

  • The purpose of the Rustic Pathways Service Scholarship is to enable first-time travelers to access our community service programs. Students who have previously traveled with Rustic Pathways are not eligible.
  • You will not qualify for consideration of a scholarship if you have already signed up for a program. We encourage those who have signed up to consult our fundraising guide. Scholarships will not be awarded or transferred to programs for which you are already enrolled.
  • We do not offer financial aid programs for households earning over $95,000 USD. This is considered combined income in the case of separated households. Please consult our fundraising guide for tips and advice on how to travel on a Rustic Pathways program.
  • FAFSA, federal tax forms, or social security benefit documents are required to verify income eligibility. If you are not a U.S. resident, any tax document from your government will be accepted. Tax filings must be from either 2015 or 2016.
