Take a tour of one of the Batey communities. Learn about the service projects you will work on, the baseball organizations we partner and work with, the communities you will visit, and the nuances of Dominican culture. The region where you will be staying is surrounded by sugar cane fields called Bateyes and is home to most of the MLB academies. These communities often lack the most basic of necessities such as running water, electricity, or access to public education. They also contain some of the lowest standards of living in the country.
Start your service project in one of the Batey communities before heading back to our base for dinner. Your service projects could involve construction or facilitation of activities for the local children. After dinner, join your group for a discussion on these Batey communities, their history, the issues affecting the area, and everyone’s thoughts on the first day. Watch a documentary about the Bateyes to help put things into context.
